an nbc meteorologist bill karins has more on this historic deep freeze. good morning to you, bill. when is this going to stop? >> just one after another. this is very impressive. some areas seeing their coldest temperatures they have seen in their lifetimes. record breaking stuff. hundreds of record lows daily lows broken. not too many all-time records, i don't believe. 120 million people have windchill advisory windchill warnings, especially areas around lexington and louisville. the worst of the windchill this morning in the chicago area. all public schools are canceled there and for good reason. imagine the kids outside in negative 28 windchill. now we're down to 23 windchill as far south as jacksonville, florida. this is the last couple that didn't make it into the deep south. some of the cold air spread a little into the rockies. windchills aren't obviously anything compared to the west -- the east excuse me. in the intermountain west we're cool. everywhere california and cold air you're protected by rockies. the cold air is not going to make it through. we are going to see a

let's send it over to bill karins who is tracking this new winter storm. there's none after that, right, bill? >> we hope not. there's a question mark for new england on friday. but we'll get to that later. let's deal with that one first. this was a historic storm. chicago, pretty much crippled all day yesterday. they picked up 18 inches of snow at o'hare and midway airports. that makes it the sixth largest snowstorm in chicago history. detroit picked up 14ismes of snow. that's the most snow they had in one single day. it'sxdÑ a 24-hour period in 40 years. that's the storm that's now heading this way. 69 million people under winter storm warnings at this time. there are some of the pictures yesterday. notice the area of the mixing. that's the pink down here at the bottom. that's the battleground area. new york city, brooklyn is under, it's raining. northern portions of new york city, we have snow still. that's where the icy situation will set up later today. all snow for you from binghamton toal bon to albany. by the time we're all said and done, a foot plu

let's get more on the historic freeze from bill karins who is back just in time. >> in this case it will be the coldest of the winter. in some cases, coldest in decades, especially the great lakes, ohio valley and a few spots in new england. we start off with a windchill of 6 in atlanta. this time the south is involved. the last couple times, the cold stayed further to the north. the worst is the most dangerous of the cold as you head out this morning. from minneapolis to green bay. chicago, negative 28 windchill. lexington, kentucky is at negative 18. the cold air has made its way to new england. for today, during the daylight hours, it won't be horrible from new york to d.c. it won't be good. but it won't be as bad as tomorrow. chicago, a high of 4 today with sunshine. that's pretty impressive. that's a very cold air mass. the days the sun is setting a little longer. tonight, we go to negative ten in chicago. we go to 30 in orlando. tonight is the peak of the cold. that's when mr. record lows will be broken. also, snow up here in areas of maine. betty, the next storm will come on the h

know about consolation prize when it comes to the weather for some of us but here is meteorologist bill karins. how are we looking? >> split. we're very much split, eastern half is cold and west is warm. right now huge arctic air mass out of canada. this is air up in alaska near fairbanks two days ago. now down near minneapolis, negative 18 right now windchill. no such thing as windchill in the west. yesterday was a beautiful, absolutely summer gorgeous day. l.a. one of the warmest spots in the entire nation at 85 degrees yesterday. it was mid-50s all the way up the west coast. no problems there. as i mentioned warm period over the next couple of days. cooled off a little towards the weekend. this is like getting a tan weather, 86 degrees. we still have a little rain to deal with in washington state. there's not a lot. storm going a little further to the north. that's the one wet spot on the map. as we go to the next five days not much advertised for the west. weather pattern set, cold in the east and warm air and dry conditions through much of the west today. so enjoy it while you have it i g

meteorologist bill karins is here tracking this massive storm. >> already the biggest snowstorm in chicago. the winds have died off. we're not looking at blizzard conditions. detroit, 14 1/2 inches. that's the most snow they've had in one single day in the last 40 years, so, yes, this was a historic storm and now the worst of it is smack in the middle of new england. all through upstate new york northern half of pennsylvania. the green shows you the rain and the rain has moved into southern portions of new york city ranging currently in brooklyn and will turn over to rain in manhattan so a lot of the three inches will be washed away by midmorning. different story, southern new england, plenty cold enough for all snow from the albany area over to boston hartford should be mostly all snow but it will change to sleet and could have an extended period of freezing rain north of new york city. new york city picked up a quick 3 or 4 inches. the highest, a foot is possible from the mass pike through worcester north pwards and freezing rain, southern portions of new england, the pink shown here and

. >>> nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with a soggy forecast for the west coast. good morning. >> it's good though. we could get nailed by this some areas up to ten inches of rain in northern california on the coast and some of the higher terrains. first light rain from portland to olympia. this is our front pushing back up to the north. this will head into seattle today. umbrella weather there. let's talk about our big storm. you can already see it out here. it's already starting to wrap itself up a mature cyclone, all the bright yellows and oranges is cloud tops. a lot of moisture with this. a lot of people calling it an atmospheric river, a ton of moisture in the atmosphere that's heading here. it's almost a pineapple express. that comes from when the moisture -- the source comes all the way from the high want islands. this cold front is kind of cutting that off a little bit. atmospheric river is probably the term closedest to describe what we're going to deal with thursday night and into friday. for the next seven days it's predicting, san francisco, 2 1/2, po

nbc meteorologist bill karins is here. snow slammed boston, will we ever see signs of a cherry blossom? >> we're only to the middle of february. in washington, d.c., the famous cherry blossoms early april, late march. this is very early. maybe it's just parts of the south and a warm climate. >>> it's not going to rainy time soon for many areas of the west. what we have in the barrel is what we have for the month so far. about two inches in san francisco, didn't atd add much yesterday. seattle 3 poichb 76 inches. we got the rain we needed in many areas of the northwest, but not the desert southwest. definitely not southern california. the warmth is going to be the story. yesterday 78 in l.a. 83 in phoenix, typical this time of year with 50s in the northwest. still very warm for this time of year throughout the inner mountain west. it's been very difficult to get people to go to the slopes when it's been this warm throughout the rockies. this storm system is a miss. the last storm came into the area this one is riding back t

bill karins is here tracking the snow for us. it seems like the snow won't stop. >> it's only going to get worse. we're heading into a very, very active period of bitterly cold and snowy weather for eastern new england. this is a slow-motion snowstorm. crews have no problem with this snow. it's a foot and a half in some areas. but over two days. crews can deal with that. we have a lot of snow to deal with. and what's going to catch people by surprise is the freezing rain around new york city southern connecticut and new jersey. that's going to make it slippery. it didn't snow first. the pavement and your front walk will be very icy. as far as the warnings go they stretch from syracuse to rochester, boston. it will probably snow lightly tuesday morning. and only another five to eight inches on top of what we already received. we'll end up total probably around a foot to foot and a half in the boston area. i was mentioning the rude pattern we're in. we get a bitterly shot of cold air on friday. a high of 21. windchills in the negat

so let's check in with nbc meteorologist bill karins for more. >> good morning. >> next up. texas storm. it started in areas of california. we did get heavy rain, welcomed rain. los angeles at the airport picked up almost three-quarters of an inch of rain. that was good. i started with a temperature map. it's 38 degrees in las vegas. it's snowing just outside of downtown vegas this morning. you can see all the moisture. the green out here is the rain. here is vegas up here. it's raining in town but all the hills are covered in snow so it will be a pretty scene once the sun comes back out. here is how it's going to play out today. as we go through the morning hours dealing with rain especially southern nevada and all of arizona, we may have showers left over in san diego. as we go through the afternoon, much of the storm leaves. we may spark up a few showers out there. but don't expect a lot of rain out there this afternoon. again, some active weather moving out as we go throughout your monday. th rain and snow. northern california you get a nice drive to work today. so the s

meteorologist bill karins joins us a little later with your valentine's day forecast. >>> convicted army soldier chelsea manning will begin her first step to becoming a woman. a historic ruling the u.s. military approved her for hormone therapy. private chelsea manning, formerly known as bradley manning, is serving a 35-year sentence for espionage. manning was found guilty of sending classified documents to the wikileaks website. after her august 2013 sentencing she made it clear she wanted to become a woman through gender reassignment. in september she sued the federal government for access to the hormone therapy. the lawsuit argued that private manning had been diagnosed with gender disfor ya the sense of being a woman in a man's body. and was at risk for self-castration and suicide if she didn't get more focused treatment. federal and many state and local prisons already administer hormone therapy to prisoners but manning is the first to request and now be granted the treatment. it's unclear when the hormone therapy will begin. >>> well in oregon an epic scandal is rocking the governo

msnbc meteorologist bill karins joins me. it is unbelievable. >> especially unbelievable when you look at the rest of the country, just the northeast, it was 70s from the southeast to denver, colorado this weekend, but the northeast is just locked in this extreme cold and snow. right now in boston area with the latest storm, they already had 12 to 14 inches 18 degrees, light fluffy snow. snowing as hard as it has. in the next three hours is peak intensity, then should taper off going through the evening. the snow is beginning to end toward the buffalo area. but it extends back to central new york. icing conditions earlier are over with in northern new jersey, just a little light snow. back to boston we have about two to three feet on the ground now, there's no signs of any warmth coming your way. if anything looks like another snowstorm is possible thursday could be windy, maybe a minor snowstorm, three to six inches that's the next event. after that temperatures crash toward the weekend with near record cold. call this cross

some in the office who are skeptical this could actually happen, according to nbc meteorologist bill karins. this morning in barrow, alaska, the northern-most city in the u.s., it was 13 degrees. in nashville, tennessee, it was 11, and it was 40 degrees in both juneau, alaska, and new orleans. it's even cold in florida. cold for them. it's so cold there that the national weather service has issued a freeze warning for the town of frostproof. it's a real place. something called the siberian express is responsible for all of this. it's actually cold arctic air from northern russia and it's predicted to be even worse tomorrow in some places like here in new york, and this weekend, more winter precipitation -- this is like a sick joke at this point. more winter precipitation predicted for some, including the state of massachusetts, where boston is already buried under 96 inches of snow. so, really, the only solution to cope with a seemingly never-ending winter is to stay inside and watch videos, like this, and contemplate whether they're real or not. there's nothing more romantic than a spontan

bill karins has the details, talking to dylan dreyer headed again to boston she said i don't know where they can put all of this snow if another storm rolls through, and it appears that will be the case. >> yeah they're piling it higher and higher sooner or later can't pile it any higher. this is different from the big blizzard two weeks ago when they had 27" of snow. this one i am more concerned with the wind than the snowfall. i'll explain. to be a blizzard you have to get three straight hours of strong winds and quarter mile or less visibility. we are going to get the winds with this storm from maine to delaware. but the heavy snow will be along the coast, and definitely our friends in maine. that's why they have blizzard watches. as far as potential snow totals go, not talking blockbuster amounts in southern new england, central new england, nine to ten inches typically in the year is a big deal not this year. friends in maine, down east main could get two to three feet. some could end up with seven feet on the ground by the time it is said and done. when they get to the point where
