i've had a student who was biracial ask, well, what would have happened to me? he wanted to know which community he would have fit into. they think -- children and no offense to adults, children think a lot more broadly than we do. they -- they're more ready to put themselves in that situation and think about it and how they would react and what their options were going to be. they're going to ask what kind of food am i wearing, what clothes am i wearing. i only get shoes once a year? what do you mean i work from 7 to 70 from sun up to sundown and then it's hardwork. i don't understand why someone would own another person. that's the number one question other than murderous intent is why -- what's their slavery. i don't understand why they couldn't do it themselves. it's a really good question. but, you know, when you start talking about look at the size of the land. they're like all right, i can understand that. but how come slaves weren't paid? a lot of kids are justice-minded. and you have to really kind of take them back to the time period. last year, though

a plea for my race, it was entitled, to a biracial audience. it was the brother of charles sumner would be the first -- he was the brother of charles sumner who would be the first black man to argue a court. frederick douglass gave a speech in 1964 after john cook ended his tenure in 1855. seceding ministers that help the cause, william cato and john martin. following him, francis grimke. anecdotally, reverend grimke performed in second wedding of frederick douglass, not at the church but very close to the church. reverend grimke was pastor for 15 years from 1877 -- 50 years. the wanted a couple of years off for good behavior but basically -- there were a couple of years off for good behavior but basically for 50 years. reverend grimke was a charter member of the forerunner of the naacp. not all members of 15 street church were committed to a legal and nonviolent methods to obtain their freedom -- strictly legal and nonviolent methods to obtain their freedom. a printmaker was one of five blacks who participated in john brown's raid on harpers f

that story is, my major point is that the resistance to buy racial democracy in columbia -- t o biracialemocracy in columbia is different than in the country of south carolina. -- the upcountry of south carolina. violence prompted the u.s. army to fight the ku klux klan. the arrests were almost all in york and spartanburg counties. the trials, however, were held in columbia, which underscored the contrast between the relatively peaceful capital -- the completely peaceful capital -- and the bloodsoaked resistance elsewhere in the state. a good demonstration of this contrast and our landscape is the cemetery, a product of the violence of 1870-71, which prompted local african-american leaders to look over the political terrorism of the last several years in the landscape. they turned back to the assassination of benjamin franklin randolph in 1868. randolph was in the state legislature. he had previously lived in charleston. but he was buried in columbia after a funeral at bethel church. after the violence of 1870-71 or in the midst of continuing violence, republicans planned a monument to r
