i'm not sure that it cheney -- that dick cheney's position on executive power was any different in the ford administration than it proved to be in the george w. bush administration. his influence in this area and the opportunities to exert authority in that environment where there were critical corrosive cynicism to be addressed was different. my guess is, although i do not know him, that you will not find any evolution in dick cheney's views. what you will find is that there was a later opportunity to assert them, and in a more absolute way, but it is very different from the attitude that edward leavy had and that president ford had of this idea of the federal government having three branches engaged in a cooperative, not a competitive or adversarial endeavor. all i think president ford would have said -- the members of congress, the members of the u.s. court, and the president all take the same oath to see that the constitution is faithfully executed, and all share a responsibility to, one try to interpret the constitution honestly, even though they may have different perspectives an

underline a lot of my experiences as peter mentioned in the white house looking for vice president cheney over in the pentagon were working for secretary gates and rumsfeld and as a reserve special forces officer out in the field. so bear with me one moment. let's take a little bit of a history lesson back on the war. and where i think we've made some critical mistakes that historians decades from now will look back on. the first is that this strategy never really adjusted as it began growing back in 2001. so we had a very ct focused strategy. a counterterrorism focus targeting taliban leaders. but as that kind of died down and as the afghan government stabilized, and what that drove unfortunately was a perennial under resourcing of the war effort. so we found ourselves as violence began to grow in the 2003, 2004 2005 timeframe. we found ourselves chasing the violence rather than putting the resources in. there were some important reasons for that, one of which must obviously was the iraq war. i was on the ground and saw been down the resources, whether with helicopters, predator drones w

[applause] dick cheney's old company halliburton has 58 offshore tax havens. the bush administration's response is to hand halliburton a seven billion dollar no-bid contract. my response as president will be no more lavish government-funded life support for favored corporations. no more tax allowances for bonuses of over a million dollars for ceos who have done nothing to earn them. and no more tax breaks that help companies move american jobs overseas. a tax code that once ran 14 pages now takes up 17,000 pages, filled with twists and turns and customized loopholes. everyone in america knows it is not fair, and if i am president we're going to scour that tax code and make it simple and fair once and for all. instead of tax breaks for the wealthiest and subsidies for special interests, and instead of photo opportunities with children as backdrops, let's give real meaning to the words "leave no child behind." it's time to give our schools the resources and our teachers the respect they deserve -- and give every child in america the best possible start in life.

. >> there was nobody more aggressive than vice president cheney and i think everybody would admit.military people that there were plenty of mistakes made for overreacting the way we did in iraq i don't think afghanistan was overreaction but iraq was and proved to be. maybe the military is a little too hawkish is that possible? >> that's like saying comedians are too funny bill. we want our pentagon and military to be hawkish. who whole vice president laid out about vice president cheney in iraq and time doesn't permitted me here to deacon structure them all. i would say to you that i covered the 2004 presidential campaign. i was out on the road with president bush when he was running for re-election against senator john kerry the democratic nominee. president bush's military record was not extensive or sterling. and, yet, we went to a lot of military bases, not for campaign purposes, but just across his presidency, and the military, the rank and file loved george w. bush they do. john kerry was seen as not one of those. >> medals and all of that i got it i thought it was a good que

but i just didn't feel that cheney showed the requisite loyalty that a deputy should show. and i just felt that the pres. was trying to calm some things down in the 2nd term. he knew he had a tough situation because people in the no knew that afghanistan was in peaches and cream. so he's trying to work stuff with the chinese. north korea, trying korea, trying to close the gap that we had the south korea. a a vice president who seem to have his own foreign-policy. the deputy has to have your back. i still feel it's president bush's fault but i think he chose wisely -- chose unwisely for his deputy. you deputy. you have to let me have a few of those thoughts. >> do you hope that the former vice president reads the book? >> i was thinking of sending him one. in his book which i'm sure is in this bookstore, but please don't buy it he takes on after -- he goes after condoleezza rice and the by name. he goes after both of us were being naÏve as if we are naÏve. there were a lot of things going on in the context of those negotiations. he goes after a spy name criticizing us in a m

jeb busch doesn't consult dick cheney, he does talk to condi rice.d rumsfeld not on the list, colin powell. jeb bush says he's his own man. when it's foreign policy you want to consult people with experience. in the republican primaries the bush name is a great asset but also a liability in others, right? >> it is. i think the question is for a lot of these republican voters we talked to in iowa and new hampshire, he is his own man. wa kind of man is he? it was interesting to see that speech in chicago, it echoed a lot more of his father's foreign policy, his temperament when it comes to global affairs and his brother. i think you're going to see rand paul, however, he sees an alley. he sees an alley up to the nomination because you have all of these hawks crowding the space in the race and not a lot of noninterventionist voices. maybe paul could find traction. >> what is he supposed to do in the sense that his father and brother are the last two republican presidents? i can't have anyone who works from them so i'm going to get foreign policy advice

even though both parties were complicit, but mostly the republicans, in invading iraq under bush-cheney on a platform of falsehoods, deceptions, and cover-ups which are now a part of american history, incontrovertible, half of the country was against it just on their own intuition, their own "what are we doing? iraq doesn't threaten us. it's run by a frightened dictator surrounded by a dilapidated army who we supported to invade iran years ago and who was our ally because he was anti-communist, and we'd give him lists of suspected communists, who he slaughtered. he was surrounded by much more powerful neighbors. why are we invading?" i mean, people figured it out that way, some of them, half of them. 300 retired generals, admirals, national security officials, famous diplomats, including jim baker and brent scowcroft and marine general zinni and the head of the former national security agency, bill odom, spoke out and wrote against invading iraq before it happened in march 2003. a majority of the people in this country think that there's something inflated about our military budget. let's say you are an important person, like dick cheney who had a pacemaker at one point they could hacko it. security experts are trying to stay one step ahead of the hackers. that is the game here. it really is just a race, again to see who gets there first. mark: what can people do to protect their medical information? shannon: looking the statement that you get in your insurance quarterly or at the end of every month -- look at the statement that you get in your insurance quarterly or at the end of every month. take a look at that. most people throw it out. if you see something fishy, call right away. if you can catch the theft early, you can put a stop to it. if it goes on for years and years, it will take you years and years to resolve it. you will have to get a lawyer and it will cost potentially thousands of dollars. mark: why does it seem like they are behind the ball on this? it seems like that should be the template when they create this stuff. why now, after the horses is out of the barn? shannon: hackers have outgrown those updates, they have advanced and we have not. mark:
