chris hogan has crunched the numbers for us and joins us now. to invest $300 a month for 65 years to get to that amount. chris hogan is here. also with us is ronald read's attorney, lori rowell. she had been his attorney for six years and knew mr. read very well. lori joins us on the cnbc line. lori, both of you, thank you for being here. we want to begin by asking what kinds of investments you discovered and mr. read had made over the years. what did you find lori? >> well, i've got a whole list here. most of his investments we found in a safe deposit box. when we totaled them there were $8.6 million worth of investments in the safe deposit box. >> $6.8 million. what kinds of investments? what kinds of names did he have? >> he had at&t bank of america, cvs, deere, ge general motors things you would recognize. he only invested in what he knew and what paid dividends. that was important to him. >> and it made me chuckle, chris, when reading about this that he left all of his money to a library but had never actually read a book about investing. h

hogan is expected to talk about his priorities including tax cuts. this was chris gordon he'll be at the state house tweeting during the speech and streaming the address live on the nbc washington app. >>> do your herbal supplements contain the active ingredients shown on the label? do they really have them in there? seems an investigation into supplements in new york state suggests they may not be. nbc's erica edwards tells us which retailers are pulling these supplements from their shelves. >> reporter: is there really ginseng or st. john's wort in those pills? ain investigation by the new york's attorney general office suggests some store brand herbal supplements sold at walgreens, walmart, target and gmc do not contain the active ingredients listed on the label. in a statement released on youtube, the new york attorney general says he's demanding those retailers pull certain products off store shelves. >> mislabeled supplements taken by the public to preserve or maintain their health pose a significant danger to those who have food allergies or take medication.

hours after his first state of the state address, it's clear larry hogan will face road blocks from democrats. chris gordon explains the issues and one both sides of the aisle can agree on. >> reporter: for the first time the governor unveiled his proposals to cut maryland taxes. he wants to repeal the tax and automatic gas tax increases. he would give release to small businesses and retirees. >> this week will start heading towards that goal by submitting legislation that repeals income taxes on pensions for retired military, police fire and first responders. >> reporter: a stand ovation from republicans, democrats remained seated. >> my county and district both o states. we are losing our citizens to those other more tax-friendly states. >> it's a multimillion dollar hit on the pockets of marylanders and in frederick county especially. that's going to be a huge relief to us. >> reporter: democrats are declaring a budget battle trying to restore proposed education spending cuts, which they say will devastate schools in montgomery and prince georges counties. >> we have to continue fighting. we stan

hogan will speak in front of a joints session at noon. the republican is expected to talk about his priorities including tax cuts. chris gordon will be there and he will tweet updates from the speech takes happens. >>> budget cuts are also a part of hogan's plan. we're learning more about how the university of maryland plans to handle cuts this year. the school is dealing with more than $15 million decrease in funding implemented by former governor mar ten owetin o'malle universy president says a tuition increase will cover about a fifrt of that. the school is also furloughing employees, some staff will have to work as many as three days a week unpaid. >>> are you feeling lucky? you may want to pick up a power ball ticket on the way to work. the jackpot is expected to reach $317 million by tonight's drawing. it's the first time in nearly a year that the jackpot has climbed above $300 million. tonight's prize is the 11th largest jackpot ever. largest belongs to the mega millions it reached $648 million in december of 2013. i'll buy one for fun. odds of winning not great. >> it could happen. would you be at work tomorrow
