i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:00. and we kick it off with developing news. air number of flights are canceled because of a problem with missed inspections. anne makovec is at oakland international airport. anne makovec reports. >> reporter: good morning. we're talking about overdue inspections. southwest has been working through the night to complete some of those inspections. but the five flights from oakland international airport were scheduled to leave at 6 a.m. so this is a time when a lot of those people are showing up to the airport only to be disappointed. southwest grounded 128 planes about one-fifth of the fleet after discovering they had not been inspected on time, specifically the hydraulic system used to control the rudder if the main system fails. 80 flights were canceled yesterday and about 20 today. >> it is scary. it is scary to hear. >> they shouldn't be overlooked. it's negligent. >> reporter: federal officials have agreed to let southwest keep flying those planes if they are checked within the next five days. southwest sent out a statement

i'm frank mallicoat. >> and i'm michelle griego. developing news in oakland, where a fire heavily damaged part of a school. kpix 5's ryan takeo is live at claremont middle school where firefighters found something unusual at the scene. ryan? >> reporter: crews are mopping up here at claremont middle school. the cafeteria is the building that was damaged right here is in the middle of this campus, it's visible from highway 24 near the rock ridge b.a.r.t. station. claremont middle school here on college avenue. at about 2:00 from highway 24, a driver saw smoke and called 911. here's what it looked like when the fire was really going just a couple of hours ago. the fire was raging through a hole in the roof. firefighters cut that hole in the roof so they could put it out. they found something unusual when they first got here, an open door to the cafeteria on this, the last day of the three day holiday weekend. a fire investigator is here on scene as fire officials will try to figure out what is in store for the school. >> opd and the s

. >> i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6:00. and we begin with some developing news. a suspect on the loose after allegedly trying to run down an officer from santa clara prompting that officer to open fire. it happened last night on el camino real in sunnyvale. and kpix 5's kiet do is at that intersection in sunnyvale where the incident played out. kiet, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. an officer-involved shooting is certainly unusual for sunnyvale and for santa clara. but it just goes to show you this kind of stuff can happen anywhere. this all began yesterday evening at 6 p.m. when a santa clara police officer was investigating a car burglary suspect in santa clara. the officer was in an unmarked suv and then followed the mercedes through sunnyvale. the officer pulled the mercedes over at el camino and wolfe road got out walked towards the car and that's when investigators say the driver of the mercedes used it as a weapon. >> the vehicle drove towards the officer at a high rate of speed. officer fearing for his life fired several shots at the vehicle. the

i'm frank mallicoat. it's 6:00. a busy intersection in menlo park is still shut down after a train crash killed a woman. kiet do is at the railroad crossing where yesterday's accident happened. he joins you with more. kiet. >> reporter: caltrains has been working through the night to clear the intersection. we have been seeing trains go through all morning long. cars not allowed through yet. they are also installing a new red and white striped crossing arm. they just put the arm on now. these are the arms that they are designed to try to keep cars from getting through these tracks in the first place. it was a horrific scene yesterday evening. the impact threw the car 40 feet from where it was impacted and came to rest against a crossing box and pole. the damage was so bad, it was difficult to tell exactly what kind of car it was. firefighters pulled that 30- year-old woman out of the wreckage took her to the hospital in critical condition. that's where she died. it's unclear why or how she ended up on the tracks. >>

i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6:00. >>> three men are in jail accused of holding a woman against her will in santa rosa for up to two months. anne makovec is in our newsroom with new details on the unusual circumstances leading to yesterday's arrest. anne. >> reporter: these men were arrested when they went voluntarily to the sheriff's office to pick up some of their property that was taken during a raid last week. this morning, the alleged mastermind of this kidnapping is sitting in the sonoma county jail. detectives say a 22-year-old woman was held against her will and repeatedly sexually assaulted behind the walls of this compound. it's on stony point road in santa rosa. officers think she had been there for about two months before escaping through an open door last week. a man who lives here is accused of orchestrating the whole crime and committing most of the sexual assaults. detectives say he had two accomplices who guarded the woman making sure she stayed put. their names jaime gomez and another man
