[laughter] a year ago this month, i went to martin luther king day breakfast and a minister said something that we all know to be true and he probably said it better than i had ever said it he said, your life expectancy is connected to your zip code. whether you grow up in ohio or east cleveland -- appalachia, ohio, or east cleveland, when you grow up in shaker heights or whether you grow up in a nasa went suburb or wherever you grow up, your life expectancy clearly -- an affluent suburb or wherever you grow up, your life expectancy clearly is connected to it. it obviously should not be that way in a country that is that rich. it is a state that is underinvested in public health. we are underinvested in early childhood education and in the kind of safety net that really does give people opportunity -- and so many low income people in our state pay for it every day. it is an economic, moral, and political issue.

northeast. these are actual air temperatures. we are shattering records across the ohio valley, the great lakes and the northeast. so new york city was 6 and that's without the windchill ins the poke nos pie ss minus 15. you get the picture. where is the cold air coming from? canada, blame canada moving southward. the next batch of air that's ready to set until but for much of the country well below average except for our friends in california where they're dealing with nice warm temperatures. we are dealing with the potential of more stormy weather across the south. taking a look at where we saw a mixture of freezing rain sleet and snow, north of atlanta, georgia moving into the carolinas, and this system is going to clip parts of new england, maybe bring boston a couple more inches of snow. they are almost at the snowiest season on record. they just have about seven inches to go. we'll watch it like deja vu across the south. more moisture moving in with the colder air. so the potential for more wintry wearings across the south where they're not typically used to this,

it's not as bad for minneapolis also omaha, chicago but that cold air has moved into the ohio valley and the northeastwindchill in boston is 9 below. logan was 2. almost every other observation around there is below zero. it's 17 below in cleveland. and pittsburg 5 below. clear skies we look good until about friday and then we will see a system dropping in here. it looks like a little bit of light rain on saturday. until then 30s and 40s. wide spread 60s today. watch how we take that system right there. this might produce a little bit of snow up in the sierra. there won't be a lot but we will get a little bit out of it. today a cold morning and then sunny and nice. nice, nice. very nice. but it's a quiet pattern. 60s on the temps. low, mid. a few upper but really because the lows are in the 30s it will be kind of tough to rebound. some clouds roll in friday. and then again it will be very light rain. not a lot. snow up in the sierra. not a lot. sunday cooler and breezy. >> so snow on friday. >> a little bit. >> it's cold but it's not stupid cold. >> or silly cold. the 15-inch snowfall warnings in effect from iowa all the way across northern areas of ohio valley to the northeast. that includes new york city and it includes boston. it really doesn't move in until overnight in the northeast. st. louis, you got lucky, you've been fluctuating about 31 32 degrees. chicago you had some idea area moving in now it's filling in where more snow easily, i think you could start to see upwards of a foot. rainfall south of indianapolis, it's all rain in louisville cincinnati, columbus, a little snow you'll be changing over to rainfall. that alleviates all of our problems. pittsburgh snowfall getting ready to change to rain once this is all said and done there's a back area of snow that could drop an additional one to two. new york city you get snow overnight and it could come down for a little bit. but rush hour it changes to a mix from sleet to freezing rain anda could stay that way throughout the morning rush to around noon before we think it will change to rain. in boston look for snowfall i don't think you're going to get above freezing on the cape, cape cod, nantucket

this snowstorm is gradually going to wine its way toward the ohio river valley, the northeast and newand. look at what dallas was experiencing on friday. a busy travel day for lots of folks, and the interstates there were a crash meyer. if you notice -- cragmire. in you notice there are just a couple of inches. in dallas, they're not used to a situation like this. cars were spinning out, there were multi-car accidents, flights were delayed out of the airport into and -- into and out of the airport. it is very slow going. and they saw a layer of freezing ice. situations like this they're very dangerous, occurring across the dallas metro area. what is going to happen? we'll watch that snowstorm across the lower great lakes and eventually toward the northeast and new england. and yes, when we say new england we're talking about boston. boston could see this weekend their record-setting snowfall. not a daily record. not a monthly record. we're talking about the entire season since they started to keep record in the late 1800s. we move toward europe and an active weather pattern developing

as it moves to the northeast, look at the snow across the ohio valley and into western pennsylvania. morning. by tomorrow afternoon, we could see snow arriving in allentown, reading, lancaster, chester county. that's by 2:00 in the afternoon. and then during the late afternoon hours, that light snow is falling for new castle county delaware south philadelphia as well. we'll see rain that carries us into sunday but by 1:00 we'll have an inch in allentown and reading. by 6:00 in the evening, at least an inch for wilmington, philadelphia and trenton. and this is when we'll start to see the rain start to mix in. north and west, a little bit more accumulation two to four inches for the reading area and for allentown. for us today we'll see brilliant sunshine. but look at the cold you'll to deal with. top winds gusting to 30 miles an hour. it will feel like it is below zero tomorrow. and tomorrow another cold morning down to 12 degrees. but the temperatures will warm. it is not cold enough for snow. here comes the rain on sunday. it's done by monday and so are the milder temperatures. 46 o

major storm system is pushing its way from the midwest to the northeast bringing heavy snow and powerful winds. >> it's too much snow. >> in ohio whiteout conditions are to blame for a 30-car pileup on the ohio turnpike that killed a pregnant woman near sandusky. cars and trucks are also sliding autointerstates -- off the interstates in indiana and behind all the snow blistering cold. temperatures are expected to dip well below zero from michigan to maine. blizzard conditions and possible coastal flooding again. >> when you can set your watch to it almost every three days you can almost guarantee a storm. >> boston has seen 80 inches of snow so far this weekend and a fourth major storm is taking aim at this region. >> we have been and will continue to be clearing snow and removing snow and melting snow and disposing of snow. >> there's so much snow in boston that they don't know where to put it. the mayor says he'll dump it into boston harbor only as a last resort. crews and equipment from six states and the national guard are in massachusetts to help remove the snow. jericka duncan cbs news boston. >>> back here in maryland cr

ohio. and that snow moved into the northeast overnight and it's still digging out from a blizzard. tom kierein here now with a look at you how the system is impacting us. >> close call. we were on the southern side of that storm, the warmer side. so we got mostly rain after a little bit of snow fell in parts of loudoun thornnorthern montgomery. now just light rain. the area in the green, that is just some very light rain that is falling. a few sprinkles northern suburbs and the eastern suburbs. a few sprinkles now just passing south of us stafford and spotsylvania into charles county. and we have another round of maybe a little more light rain coming through later this morning. right now all above freezing mid to upper 30s metro area. some mild air staying to our south today. in the mountain low to mid-40s there. but strong gusty winds will bring in chillier air as we get into the afternoon. watch out this area in blue, though. there might be a few slushy spots from some of that snow existing in northern montgomery, northern loudoun, points north. an inch or two fell near the penns
