we're traging another area, too, right down to the south around areas of quantico, friend fredericksburg, southern maryland and thnohe nk. winter atr vint 9:00 p.m. for the threat of accumulation of snowfall bursts of snow. again, generally an inch or less, but it will stick to area roads. as low as our temperatures are, especially those untreated roads. so the forecast right now what we're looking at a 40% chance that we'll see anywhere from nothing to a trace but a 50% chance that we'll have a coating to around an inch of snowfall throughout this time period, again, from about 4:30 to 8:00 reducing visibility too, on area roads. but this just part of the story. let's go to doug with more. >> the other part of the story is the cold and the wind. this system very similar to what we saw on valentine's night. the snow came through covered the roads quickly. then here comes the colder air. notice back to the west columbus, pittsburgh in the teens right now. that's where they will stay. those colder numbers moving in overnight. here's what to expect overnight tonight. look at the windchill e

significant snowfall is likely through the overnight hours as well. 36 in gaithersburg. 38 in quantico and still 41 at reagan national airport and our timeline shows the clouds in all night. temperatures will fall in the middle 20's. looks as though the snow will guiness specially southern suburbs around 2:00 a.m. the heaviest rate of snowfall would be between 5:00 and 8:00 a.m. and slowly taper off and then one to three inches we think, in the immediate metro area. our futurecast bears this out with snow advancing by 4:00 a.m. the darker blue areas show the heavier amounts and they tend to be d.c. metro south and east especially farther south in virginia and in time on the eastern shore, should clear out of here by mid to late morning and when it does i think the result will be generally one to three inches through the metro area shaded in blue. much lighter amounts north of that when you get to southern maryland, south of stafford through fredricksburg and northern neck three to six and more travel to the south will get you the jackpot, six to 10 to 12 inches not out of the question.

washington, the warmer the temperatures are. 58 degrees right now in fredricksburg, you look at quantico, this is 45. that's weird. not really. see the big bend in the potomac? the winds are blowing across the cold water of the potomac river so where the weather sensor is at quantico, the air temperature is a lot warmer. warm air hasn't penetrated in the far northern suburbs yet. we have a few high clouds around. more clouds will be increasing tonight. this is another cold front. we can tell by the cloud cover, temperatures falling behind and a little bit of moisture not a whole lot with this one. as we get through tomorrow morning, it's certainly possible we can have a few snow showers or snow flurries with the trunk passing through. behind the cold front, it will get a lot colder. temperatures on our side of the front are very mild. still chilly to the north but on the other side of the cold front, temperatures are falling. 27 in detroit right now. 18 degrees in chicago. and the difference is pretty noticeable on this chart. this shows how many more degrees warmer than it was this time

it's 19 right now in cumberland and in gaithersburg. 23 at quantico. 22 degrees in baltimore. 24 at reagan national airport. that's part of the story. the other part is really what it feels like outside because the persistent northwesterly winds. it feels like 9 at reagan national. feels like 7 in manassas. these wind chill values will only increase by a deg or two today. it's going to be cold and sunny and breezy. and tonight is going to be cold again. what we're watching is the air -- cold air mass arctic air literally building in from the northwest. high pressure to our west bringing in the persistent winds in. if we have to tonight, the winds will diminish a bit as the high moves kind of south in the area and out. in for the approach of the much colder cold front. we'll climb upper 30's i think but late afternoon hours everything changes as the arctic boundary comes plowing through the area. being accompanied by some snow showers probably during the afternoon hours. temperatures will rapidly fall and the winds will increase. polar high pressure building in will interact with the parts
