>> an understandably shaken albert morales. he's the public informations officer from the san jose police department. he is taking live questions right now from reporters that have been on the scene. really covering this all night. the shooting itself happened about 6:30 last night. there was a welfare check that police were actually going to a home to check on a man, when they got there, that is when that man opened fire on a veteran san jose police officer and a recent recruit that was with him. that veteran officer, a 14-year member of the force, he mentioned his name there, michael johnson was shot. he, unfortunately, died. the standoff continued into the night, and it just ended this morning where officers eventually found the suspect who was on the balcony of the home, and he, in fact, was dead as well. just before 2:00 this morning, the department sent out a tweet saying "sjpd grieves as we offer our condolences to the family of our brother, michael johnson." we share in their loss this morning. bob redell is also on the

we talked with albert morales. he says it is still going to be some time before they get to go home because the scene is not clear. though the suspect is dead, his body is still in place where he died, and also, sadly this morning, we have found out that the officer's body is still there on the scene as well. the coroner is there on the scene trying to determine how they can move the officer's body out and also the suspect's body out. but until that happens, that scene will not be cleared for folks to return back home. we have more information coming up for you in the next half-hour. about when that timetable might allow those folks to go back home. but again, there was a mother we talked with who ran out for a quick trip to the grocery store. left her 1-year-old and 3-year-old with a sitter and she spent the night without them last night. so a very difficult night for the families who live around there. but again, police chief larry esquivel said he was very moved by the support that the community showed in helpin

officer albert morales talks about when those folks might be able to return home. >> they were in the process of allowing them back into their -- they just needed to go ahead and kind of render some of the area safe. collect evidence. and then they were going to allow people back in. >> reporter: larry esquivel says that officer michael johnson was a field training officer and just a coincidence that he didn't happen to have a recruit with him last night. many of the folks who spent the night out of their homes and in their cars, they will be able to start going back home this morning once the body of the gunman is removed, and once all of the evidence is collected. but the family of the officer has been notified. officer johnson has a wife, who happened to be out of town when this all happened, and the police department now doing what they can to make sure she can get back home to be with her husband as soon as possible. his family has also been notified, and the officers say that was one of the toughest jobs, telling the parents that they had lost their son. in san jose, kris sanche
