joining us, chris king, the editorial director of "the st. louis american."y times. i wonder what your perspective is on what happened last night. we heard from the st. louis county police chief jon belmar saying it's miraculous in his mind something like this hasn't happened before. >> yes. i can see why. really once you think someone might want to shoot a cop, protest is a good place to do it. they're standtion there for hours at a time in a group. i will say i was at the police department when belmar spoke to the press today. he said they have a cooperating witness. we know they'll investigate this crime seriously. depending on what the witness told them, they may have overreached on their claims. remember they said they had a bad time telling the bad guys in a protest crowd. that's when they're across the street from each other. this shooter was 125 yards away. they need a witness to connect it to the scene. otherwise they don't know this person was a protester other than someone who wanted to kill a cop. >> that's an interesting point. belmar did say i f

joining me by phone kris king ed tort director for a newspaper. chris, good morning. ferguson has shed some necessary weight. you understand the department of justice report showed a scheme between the police chief, the jump and the city manager where they were consciously driving revenue by issues tickets and driving cops to write tickets. that's unethical and borderline criminal and it's damed in the report. they had to get rid of the three people in that scheme the city manager, john shaw the judge ronald brockmeier and the police chief, thomas jackson. all of those three are gone. the other people that are gone had sent racist e-mails including william mudd the sergeant on the scene that took darren wilson's testimony and testified to the grand jury. he was one of the racist e-mailers. so the ferguson city government got rid of some dreadful dead weight that they need to get rid of if they're going to have a deal with the department of justice. >> chris, were the folks that were protesting last night and the folks that have been protesting what are they asking for
