in ways that make it very easy for people to band together as consumers, as workers into democratic trade unions, as small taxpayer groups, and as communities who are being abandoned by corporations under government policy and tax benefits to send the jobs to fascist and communist regime abroad? >> compound and complex. all right. most white union soldiers were not. they were democrats when they listed. that changed tremendously. of course, abraham lincoln had a lot to do with that. while history was being made bruce patton noted the incredible sight of hardened soldiers going up to battle and boating for more war to be far by itself, instead of an end to fighting. the men who voted for it -- it was disproportionately for lincoln -- that vote for lincoln was not just of over lincoln, it was a vote for emancipation, and a vote of confidence in the commander-in-chief, and frankly a vote of confidence in themselves, the soldiers they had become. lincoln had a relationship with the men of the union that is probably unique among all commanders in chief. what's interesting is that was east and west, even though lincoln never went to the west. always in the east. we see davis's tremendous book on lincoln and union soldiers and he said, he didn't go west because the armies in the west were victorious. there was no reason. i tend to agree. the armies of the potomac, a magnificent army that ge

now glazer has turned off some members of the democratic party by -- and unions by being fiscally consecutive's in favor of pension reform and he wants to ban b.a.r.t. bourqueers from striking. -- workfares striking. on the political -- workers from striking. on the political spectrum. in fact when the republican candidate dropped out she enforced him. if you go to the website right now it says go vote for steve glazer, we have no republican in the race and glazer is positioned to get some of those republican votes. so if you're backing another candidate, what do you do to prevent glazer from benefiting from those votes? according to the lawsuit, you send out mailers and making it look like hurdle is still in the ration. so republicans don't -- race. so republicans vote for her instead of the actual candidate. that's the nearry, confusing republican voters and they won't vote for glazer. >> remember the old-fashioned days when you just voted for who you like? >> what? who does that? >> all about strategy. yeah. well how can people vote for somebody who isn't in the race? >> her name is unfort

. >> this seat opened up last november when republican baker slipped by union backed liberal democrat after an ugly battle that included a democrat who opposed the b.a.r.t. strikes. baker's victory was unusual and divided a disconcerting party. >> how do you bring this to the present race? >> here we go. democratic divide is really once again endangered in tomorrow's race. albeit with a slightly different twist. here's what's going on. democrats outnumber republicans in the district by a nice 44% to 29% margin. should be a slam dunk. once again, there is a huge fight within. there are three democrats in the race. glazer alienated folks back a couple years ago. an assembly woman with strong labor backing and a former assembly woman buchanan that's enough to create division. here's the other element. here you have a republican candidate who dropped out of the race but she remains on the ballot because of her late departure. meanwhile, a union pac spent more than $70,000 in support. most observers say why would they do that? they think it's a ploy to take republican voters ersvoters. >>

. >> there is an increasing tension within the democratic party, particularly as relates to teachers unions and some of arne duncan's proposals. there is a large number of democrats that are reform democrats that feel as though teacher tenure and charter schools and other -- education innovations aren't really necessary. there's another group that tends to support the union position which is that a lot of this is teacher bashing and all. is that something -- is that something democrats are going to have to make a choice about going forward, not just for teachers unions but also with some of the very powerful public sector unions, the kind that you took on when you were a treasurer? >> democrats and all public servants just need to be willing to be honest about the reality. if we have schools that aren't working and aren't educating our kids well and the results aren't what they need to be we need to face the facts and fix them. if that means making some changes that teachers unions are uncomfortable with i think democrats have to have the courage to do that. unfortunately, all of this stuff

why haven't the countries in the arab world democratized like other countries in latin america, former soviet union eastern europe, those countries although they're still sort of, you know, liberalizing, but they're making significant incremental gains towards something that was better than the sort of like, authoritarian stalemate, if you may. so then we start breaking down some of the key explanations that pertain to the arab world and those center around two explanations. again, there's the culture of islam argument or the culture of authoritarianism argument, and then there's the political economy argument. and with the political economy argument, it's probably most salient which it basically argues that where you have oil resources or resource minerals like you to in many countries in the arab world and the gulf region, those resources have benefited authoritarian regimes to solidify their rule. and, basically, redistribute resources in ways that undermines a democratic social contract, if you may. in other words, now citizens are getting very generous benefits from the regime, but in exchange
