san jose mayor sam liccardo tweeted a message of condolences saying johnson left behind a family. he was a 14 year veteran from the san jose police department. he was the 12th officer in the department's 166 year history to die in the line of duty. the messages of sympathy have been pouring in for officer johnson's family. >> this has been san jose's darkest hour. our hearts go out to the family, the friends and colleagues of the fallen officer. >> his fellow officers also the last san jose police officer who was killed in the line of duty was 24-year-old rookie officer jeffrey fontana. he was shot and killed during a vehicle stop in south san jose in october of 2001. investigators say he was ambushed, his gun was still in his holster when he was killed and in a sad twist fontana and johnson were in the same academy class. officers johnson's colleagues are also offering condolences this morning. they issued this message. stay with us here at ktvu channel 2 for the very latest developments on the story throughout the morning. again we are waiting for comment from the police chief.
