we will have more with michelle alexander after headlines.gress has resolved a standoff over the department of homeland security after a retreat by the republican leadership. the agency nearly shut down last week as republicans sought to link its budget to reversing president obama's executive actions on immigration. on tuesday, house speaker john boehner brought down and brought up a clean spending bill. the measure funds the dhs through the end of the year. president obama's signature health care law's spec before the supreme court today to determine whether millions of low income people lose their health insurance. right-wing opponents are waging a technical argument against specific language in the law which concerns tax subsidies to help people afford insurance. the challengers claimed the language does not allow people to receive subsidies if they get there and the -- insurance through a federal exchange. if the supreme court sites with the challengers -- sides with the challengers, more than 9 million people in the largely republican s

i think michelle alexander's book, "the new jim crow" is a great volume analyzing one of the current big problems of today, which is to say the criminal justice system. to read that book and to act on it and to understand its broader meaning. we have to understand what is happening today and what happened 50 years ago in selma in light of the overall sweep of american history from 1619 on for those african-americans, what opinion preparation is, how it is maintained and state terrorism, cha is what we witnessed 50 years ago and now we get a criminal justice system as michelle alexander and others explained it. with respect thougho that criminal system t ties in to the vote. in 1966, possibly 265,000 african-americans able to vote because of the votings right. today, there are 270,000 who can't vote because they have felon records. i don't mean felony records of some heinous crime. it could be something as simple as $5 bag of drugs. once you are a felon, you've got to get pardoned to be able to vote. >> wipes people all over the rolls. of 5 million. >> tony harrison on the ground, tel

michelle alexander did i think a really fabulous job on her last book the new jim crow and unpacked a lot of that. michael ty murray another brilliant person who has done the same. what i'm trying to add to this conversation is how do we appropriate political responsibility? how do we bring politics into this quite naturally because i'm a political scientist at nasa sort of thing i want to do and i think it's also important for us to do that because too often when we have these incidents happen in the country our conversation about what has happened in our conversation about who is to blame is too narrowly focused. we asked the following types of questions. was officer darren wilson justified in shooting michael brown? was officer daniel pata lehto with new york city rightly or wrongly using the chokehold? we talked a lot about the grand juries in both of those cases have indicted and that's pretty much where the conversation stopped. i'm sure very few of us who are passionate about this are aware that the obama administration will soon announce its plans to not pursue charges against

for young people of color, this idea of a new victim joe, michelle alexander's book a nyounew jim crowon. when they say there will never be an "n" word from my fraternity you can hang them from a tree will never be a pledge from me. that says as our young generation comes on there is toxic stuff we have to deal with. >> i want to ask you about that video. it is shocking to see these fraternity boys on this bus singing those repugnant chants. it's hard to get where we are with race relations. we have a black president. have made all sorts of accomplishment and progress. where have these kids been? how can these kids still be singing this song? >> one of the other things happening in america is the great sorting. we are basically moving ourselves both education alley and in places that we live into same kinds of groups in same kinds of neighborhoods and we're sorting ourselves out. >> self-selecting. >> this is self-done. this is not by policy. we are doing it ourselves. that is causing our kids even as they live in a much milder climate than what i grew up in and what my parents grew up

about this new young movement they have a book they read call "the new jim crow" written by michelle alexander, a bible for the young people, and it talks about mass incarceration, talking about how school to prison pipeline way too many african-american and poor kids wind up in prison when they could have been helped in another way and got a job. that new jim crow that -- which is a sense of incarceration industry has gotten out of control. there's a bipartisan movement to do something about it. you have republicans like rick perry and rand paul and others speaking out against this. the president actually embraces republicans and the black lives matter movement at the same time by speaking about incarceration. that would be a brilliant move in the speech politically and morally. it's become the bible of this new generation. >> and, douglas, everything is planned, you know down to the thethe the nth degree here. his daughters emerged first. i felt that symbolic of the message. one of the messages that the president wants to make about the next generation the generation of his daughters. he jus

michelle, thank you. joining us now for more the president of the national organization of black law enforcement executives cedric alexander. thanks very much for joining us. we are just hearing that two ferguson police officers have now been forced to resign over those racist e-mails, another city clerk, she resigned earlier. she was effectively fired. is that enough based on everything you know? >> well i think what's going to happen going forward is that as this process continues to unfold as this report continues to be revealed and show exactly what the president stated oppressive and abusive behavior on behalf of the police department i believe we are going to continue to see further firings and resignations to take place in that city. >> the president, you just heard him say, he doesn't necessarily believe ferguson is an isolated incident. you have your finger on the pulse around the country. what do you think? >> well i certainly do agree with the president, but it's also important for us to move forward and i truly believe that the president through the recommendations that have been made by the task force here mos
