alex savidge is live in san pablo. center and people in that neighborhood won't have a hospital nearby for medical emergencies alex. >> reporter: good morning to you. people in this community have relied on doctors medical center for close to home. a lot of patients will have to travel farther to other hospitals in order to get help. this is the end of the line for doctors medical center. you can see the sign out front here letting everyone know the place will be closing at 7:00 this morning. they will not be taking any new patients after that time. doctors medical center is the only hospital serving this part of the town. the hospital has been struggling financially losing $18 million a year. and last spring the final straw voters rejected a parcel tax designed to keep the hospital going. in an attempt to fill the void here in this community, the lifelong medical center community health clinic will be opening up across the street with an emergency care center. this is right across from doctors medical center. >> i thi

alex savidge is live out there. alex, you're talking about how the closure is leaving people in the area without an emergency room. >> reporter: has been critical. patients in this area have counted on the hospital for emergency care close to home and now as the hospital gets set to close, people will have to go farther away in order to get the care that they need. this is nearly the end of the line. just an hour left here for doctors medical center in san pablo. it says doctors medical center will close at 7:00 a.m. this morning. that means after that time they won't be taking any patients. it serves mostly low income patients. the hospital has been struggling opinionly. winning $18 million a year and

alex savidge is also at the scene this morning. alex, they still looking for the driver? >> reporter: they are still look for the driver. as far as the child goes, we want to point out here the child was in a car seat we understand and was not transported to the hospital. so that is the good news out here. a lot of damage done at the end of this pursuit when that car crashed into two power poles and you can see the streets still blocked off here as pg&e crews do repair work on those poles. after the driver lost control of that car, he got out and ran off leaving behind a young child in the car. chp officers came in and searched the area for the driver but he does remain on the run this morning. thousand this pursuit began just after 2:00 this morning when chp officers pulled this mans car over on 880. the driver initially stopped but then sped off and eventually lost control and crashed. now it's unclear what sort of violation the man was stopped for or why he ran. the chp has been in touch with the child's mother and they are making arrangements to return that child to h

alex savidge is near the scene. alex, what is it like out there right now?hings look pretty good. traffic flowing freely this morning. the morning crash had the potential to do a lot of damage to the morning commute. but the chp really took care of the crash. realtively quickly. all things considered. and this morning this is the result. the cars that are heading away from you, that is traffic going northbound on 880 just north of davis street. that is where not so long ago traffic was at a standstill. there was a freeway closure in effect. all the lanes shut down because of this firey crash. 7 cars involved in a chain reaction crash. and according to the alameda county fire department, there were a total of five people that were hurt out here in this accident. one of them critically. a cal tran crew came in and closed the freeway. traffic was diverted off of 880 at davis street for a time. but again that closure lasted just about two hours and just about an hour and a half ago somewhere in that range is when the freeway reopened to traffic. the chp says the

the open san leandro border it happened about just an hour ago and ktvu alex savidge is there live with the latest. >>reporter: good morning. a huge mess out here for early- morning commuters in the east bay. take a look behind us. northbound lanes, all of them of 880 are shut down this morning. this is just north of davis street here in san leandro. you can see traffic is simply at a standstill right now. as we push down here, you can see all those flashing lights. those are the first responders dealing with this multicar crash. a chain reaction crash involving a total of seven cars. for some video from a short time ago. we understand one of those cars burst into flames this morning. we also do understand that at least one person had to be freed from a car. that was involved in this crash. had to be freed with the jaws of life by first responders. several people have been injured out here. we do understand, but the chp has not been able to tell us the severity of those injuries this morning.

alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> the san pablo police officer set to appear in court on criminal charges involving drugs, a gun and child. the 32-year-old officer ken nicket white was arrested last wednesday after police received a tip. a plain clothes officer witnessed him buying drugs and they say there was a little girl in the car. >> there was a 2-year-old child in the vehicle at the time of the transaction. >> the officer was on paid leave already for a separate investigation. >> investigators haven't provided details about that previous investigation. it's not clear whether the child was his. white is being held on $250,000 bail. he's already pleaded not guilty to felony child harm and child endangerment charges. >>> b.a.r.t. is trying to ease overcrowding by ordering more train cars. as tara moriarty explains, that doesn't mean more elbow room for passengers any time soon.

the officers were not hit by gunfire but as alex savidge shows us the shooting still prompted a massiveanhunt. >> hands up! >> reporter: oakland police surrounded a home near 55th avenue and foothill early this morning. the s.w.a.t. team was called out as police searched for the people who opened fire on undercover officers nearby. none of those officers were hit. but it was without a doubt a tense time. >> this is scary stuff. it just shows that people are not afraid to use guns and it's -- we need to continue to work hard to try to reduce violence. >> reporter: the shooting happened around 1:30 this morning near brookdale and 35th avenues. undercover detectives were doing surveillance on a suspected gang member as part of a homicide investigation. that's when at least one person in a car fired toward officers. >> i think that they likely saw the undercover officer in the area and wondered who he was doing there. we tried to avoid the confrontation by leaving but they started shooting at the officer. >> reporter: the shoot er's car sped off with officers in pursuit and it crashes a sho

ktvu fox 2 reporter alex savidge is live with how a good samaritan got caught up in the whole thing. alex, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, to you. the fairfax police sergeant who initiated this pursuit told me he is simply amazed no one was seriously hurt here. take a look why. the car he was chasing was flying last night. going anywhere between 80-100 miles an hour before it crashed. the driver lost control on center boulevard and took out a stop sign before slamming into a parked car. the man behind the wheel hopped out and ran into the neighborhood but with the help of a canine, he was captured hiding out on the side of a nearby home. now that black toyota at the center of this pursuit had been reported steelen at 11:00 last night here in marin county. sergeant re koa with the fairfax police department spotted ha car. >> reporter: and the car involved this this pursuit was first stolen around 11:00 last night on a rural road in west marin. the woman whole owns that stolen car apparently got involved in some kind of road rage case. road rage incident with two men in another

as alex savidge explains, the woman says she was told she needed a doctor's note to fly. >> my family is being forcibly removed from the airplane. >> reporter: a disturbing ordeal for elizabeth sedway who posted this video to facebook after she and her family were pulled off an alaska airlines flight monday. the placer county woman said it was all because of her illness. the wife and mother suffers from multiple myeloma, a rare form of plasma cancer. she's undergoing chemotherapy. before boarding, sedway said she put on a surgical mask and mentioned to an airline employee that she was feeling weak and may need extra time getting on the plane. sedway and her family took their seats but that's when an airline employee asked them to leave the flight. >> they are taking me off the airplane because i don't have a doctor's note saying i can fly. all of these people are waiting. i'm being removed as if i'm a criminal or contagious. >> reporter: the airline was apparently worried about sedway suffering a medical emergency during the long flight across the pacific from hawaii to san jose n sed

near sebastopol, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> the highway patrol arrested a man overnight who led them on a high-speed chase for about 40 miles. it started in vallejo just before midnight. our traffic cameras here captured the chase as the suspect crossed the bay bridge. at times he got up to speeds up to 115 miles per hour from the bay bridge. the driver continued onto 101 and eventually stopped in daly city. the driver then got out of the vehicle and tried to run away but was eventually captured. the chp says the car he was driving was stolen out of san bruno. pg&e says it is now safe for some antioch residents to leave their homes. a sheltner place order was lifted within the last hour. it went into effect at 8:45 after a gas leak in the area of buchanan and somerville roads. it happened after a construction crew hit a four- inch gas line. this order affected everyone at the chateau mobile home park. the two roads were closed while pg&e worked on stopping the leak. >>> explosions and flames at a home in mountain view. investigators are at the scene trying to determine what

alex savidge joining us live in pacifica.re there right near the carcass with the efforts to answer all of those questions and also give us an upclose look at the whale. we have an upclose look for you. good morning to you. this whale has become quite an attraction at this beach. here it is behind us. we're at the very south end of the beach next to morey point. you can see that massive mammal stuck right there in the sand. the tide is coming in. it's much higher than it was earlier this morning. the carcass is getting pounded by the waves. as you look over here to the left side, you can see a lot of people drawn to this whale. it's pretty amazing to see it up close. people are coming down to take pictures of it. experts believe this is a nearly 50-foot long sperm while that washed ashore sometime yesterday. we understand that later on today, there will be researchers from the marine mammal center in sausalito coming down here to take a closer look at the whale and perform a necropsy to figure out how the mammal died. in the

alex savidge is at a bus stop right now. so what's new? rning, alex. >> reporter: dave, good morning to you. well, first of all, muni rolling out of a series of service improvements. part of what's new are the bus shelters. this is near geary and leavenworth. and they have new signage on them, new decals and the new maps that muni says will be easier to read and help riders get to where they need to go. also, we can tell you that muni is launching the rapid network. that means the mta will stop using the word limited to describe express buses. riders should be looking for rapid routes. muni has changed the number of bus lines as well. keep that in mind. this is all part of a muni forward initiative and all together these improvements are expected to boost service for about 165,000 el daily -- daily riders. another aspect of this overhaul, buses will be showing up more frequently. in some cases, a number of stops have been eliminated from certain routes, all in an effort to stream line. it's probably a good idea to take a closer look at the

ktvu fox 2 reporter alex savidge is live now with more on how an innocent bystander was put in harms way. good morning alex. >> reporter: good morning, to you. and this chase late last night ended with a violent crash right here on this street. the stolen car it crashed into a parked car that was right here in this area where you see the bare kids are now set up. you can probably see quite a bit of degree there on the sidewalk after this crash. the driver until this case was going close to 100 miles an hour down residential streets in this area. this was a stolen toyota sow lira that police were pursuing. that car took out a stop sign before crashing here in this neighborhood. the man at the wheel then hopped out and ran into the neighborhood as police were cauliclessing in. but with the help of a canine, he was captured a short time later. hiding out on the side of a nearby home. that solar a had been reported stolen around 11:00 last night. a short time later a fairfax police officer spotted the car driving in the downtown area. he tried to pull over the driver but the driver clearl

alex savidge, thank you. we'll talk to you later. >>> later today the city of san jose is expected to approve a test program to give body cameras to police officers. this follows a new independent police audit that calls for more transparency within the police department. last year 340 complaints were filed against a police department. when the body cameras are issued, the number of complaints will go down along with the police use of force. >> if we can move faster, i think we should. it's really important we know there has been increasing concerns nationwide. >> if it's approved, san jose's new body camera program would start in september with about a dozen police officers. if all goes well, the entire police department could have those cameras by next year. >>> time is 5:05. the woman known as the serial stow away is once again a free woman after getting released from a florida jail. maryland jean heartman has been arrested six times and accused of sneaking on to planes without boarding passes or tickets.

alex savidge joins us live with an update from oakland police headquarters. orning, alex. >> reporter: well, tori good morning to you and everyone here breathing a sigh of relief. no officers hurt. the chief of police said this was a scary situation. someone opened fire on several undercover officers as they were involved in an investigation into a homicide and that shooting then led to a long tense manhunt in an oakland neighborhood and in the end three people were taken into custody. >> hands up! >> reporter: that was the scene around 1:30 this morning. officers surrounded a home near 5 ath avenue and foothill searching for the people responsible for that shooting. two people were arrested right away. but there was a third man who was initially able to get away from officers. he was on the loose for some time. that prompted police to call in the s.w.a.t. team to do a yard-to-yard search. that third man eventually was captured. this whole situation began around 1:30 in the morning when officers were doing an undercover operation investigating a homicide from

alex savidge is joining us live. you are at the scene. happened. >> reporter: well, dave, good morning to you. a young child on board during this dangerous pursuit and the violent crash that followed. thankfully, that child was strapped into a car seat according to the chp and they had only minor injuries. the car that crashed, slammed into two power poles here on tennyson road. pg&e crews are out here. they are very busy doing repair work. they just brought in new poles to replace the old ones. there are about 100 people in the area still without power. we should point out that this youth center beus here and the neighboring -- behind us here and the neighboring center have power and they are open for business. this pursuit started when chp officers pulled this man's car over on 880 nearby. now, the drive initially stopped but then sped off and then eventually lost control. after crashing his dark the driver got out and ran off, leaving behind that young child in the car along with a woman. chp officers came in and searched the area for

alex savidge reporting live.. >>> a santa clara county supervisor says special ships may soon be bringing drinking water to the bay area. however, dave cortese says they won't be delivering water from some place else. instead, the ships would have special equipment to process ocean water into cinking water -- into ink doctoring water. these are used around the world, a permanent plant is already in place in alameda county but it doesn't use ocean or bay water. instead, it processes underground water and it takes out the salty taste by adding minerals. >> there are concerns this morning that one of the anchor rods may be broken. caltrans says that a recent ultral sou pash -- ultrasound test revealed one of the rods may have snapped after it was installed. testing showed it may be as much as 6 inches shorter than the other 421 rods. according to the chronicle, caltrans will conduct more tests to determine if the rod is really broken or if it was just cut shorter for some reason. caltrans is emphasizing all of the o

ktvu's reporter alex savidge live on the scene, this has brought out the chief of police. >> reporter: the chief was down here a short time ago. i had a chance to speak with him and a sense of relief because he confirmed no police officers were injured in the shooting late last night. he tells me someone, three men opened fire on to undercover officers last night. two of those men have been taken into custody, a third remains outstanding. that's what you see the police presidents out here this morning. we're at the section of 55th ave. and foothill boulevard. as you can see, quite a few police officers are out here we've also seen members of s.w.a.t. out here as well. they are searching for one man sought to be armed, in his 20s. again, he is thought to be armed and obviously believed to be quite dangerous given the circumstances. the chief tells me this all began with a homicide investigation last night on the 1400 block of 90th ave. he tells me there were to undercover detectives who are in that area working follow-up on a homicide investigation, that's when someone opened fire on t

ktvu fox 2's alex savidge, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, one of the cars in this early morning crash lost control, jumped on the curb and slammed right in to the fire hydrants that used to sit here at this corner, the hydrant knocked right off creating a spectacular fountain. and this happen ted intersection of geary and 11th avenue just after midnight, water shooting in the air and flowing on the streets, firefighters estimate as much as 75,000 gallons of water were spewing or did spew from that broken hydrant, it took about a half hour for firefighters to turn off the water as you can see the firefighters got soggy in the process, they had to cover themselves with a tarp of some kind as they went in to work on that water valve as the water was flowing through the air at least one person was treated for injuries as a result of this early morning crash unclear how serious those injuries were and again back out here, the streets now dry as quite a bit of weather flowed through them and difficult to see all that water loss especially given the drought situation we're in r

alex savidge is live out there. alex, you're talking about how the closure is leaving people in the area without an emergency room. >> reporter: has been critical. patients in this area have counted on the hospital for emergency care close to home and now as the hospital gets set to close, people will have to go farther away in order to get the care that they need. this is nearly the end of the line. just an hour left here for doctors medical center in san pablo. it says doctors medical center will close at 7:00 a.m. this morning. that means after that time they won't be taking any patients. it serves mostly low income patients. the hospital has been struggling opinionly. winning $18 million a year and the final straw came last spring that is when voters rejected a parcel tax designed to keep the hospital running. in an attempt to fill the void in this community lifelong medical care, community health clinic with an urgent care center has opened right across the street from doctors. re or of lifelong medical said emp
