i'm randall pinkston. a group of former educators in atlanta will find out today if they'll spend time in jail for their role in one of the biggest school cheating scandals in american history. sentencing gets under way for ten former teachers and administrators in atlanta's public schools convicted of conspiring to change scores on standardized tests so teachers can get bonuses and in some cases keep their jobs. what were some of the protesters saying about the case? we see some of them behind through. yes, they are just dispersing right now. they were very vocal this morning, and basically what they're saying is that they're not denying that this cheating was going on in the atlanta public school system, but they say that the teachers were victims of the system. they were trying to keep their jobs. they came under pressure and they were trying to meet. unrealist'sunrealic standard. they want them to be given time served. many who were convicted were taken away in handcuffs and have been in jail. they wan

randall pinkston is here with more. good morning. >> as you say, it was iran's supreme leader and president rouhani in what appears to abcoordinated effort to promote iran's interpretation of the agreement that an immediate end to sanctions in exchange for nuclear deal should be the deal. president rouhani's comments came first at a speech marking iran's newly nuclear technology day. here's what he had to say. >> we will not sign any agreement unless all economic sanctions are lifted on the very first day of implementation of the agreement. >> this morning the ayatollah underscored the position saying lifting sanctions in stages is unacceptable and must be removed on the same tape the deal is signed he also says what's been done so far secures neither the make that deal nor its content nor is it even clear whether talks will bear fruit and lead to a deal. the framework agreement last week does not include immediate lifting of sanctions imposed on iran saying sanctions will be suspended once international monitors verify

i am randall pinkston, this is aljazeera america. this latest incident comes one day after what may be the deadliest mass drowning in the history of the mediterranean sea. hundreds of migrants from africa are feared dead after their boat sank off the coast of libya sunday. an emergency meeting is underway in france of the european union. they are facing criticism for scaling back rescue efforts. immigration has always been a major issue for the e.u. how long ago did they scale back the rescue efforts and is this latest tragedy creating a shift in e.u. policy when it comes to migrants? >> the italian government instituted an operation called our sea and for the 12 months it ran from october 2013 and october 2014 it did pick many people alive out of the mediterranean sea but it was costing many millions of dollars a month and overcall cost over $40 million. the italian government said it could not sustain that. the european union started an operation called try to know, with only a third of the assets and unable to collect as many peop

good morning live from new york city i'm randall pinkston. u.s. paratroopers are now on the ground in ukraine. the kremlin warns it will only destabilize the fragile ceasefire. the u am balance door tweeted the arrival. the soldiers are in the country to train ukraine national guard the u.s. mission set to last for the next six months. rory challands joins us live from moscow. what can you tell us about what the paratroopers are expected to do. >> they've come from italy the 173rd airborne brigade of the u.s. army, and they are expected to be on a kind of rotating mission in ukraine for the next six months or so. they're going to be training the ukrainian national guard. they are the only foreign troops in ukraine at the moment. there are already on the ground there some 75 british military advisors. they are on a rotate mission as well. 200 canadians are going to be arriving, as well. at the moment, they are all going to be located in the west of the country doing training and things like that, but of course this hasn't gone down well with moscow

i'm randall pinkston. baltimore is calm this morning after the first night of a mandatory curfew. 2,000 national guard members joined about 1,000 law enforce. officers on the street. there were scuffles between police and demonstrators shortly after the curfew took effect. several were arrested. john terrett is live in baltimore with the latest this morning. >> good morning to you randell. it's a bright sunny, but chilly morning, rather like yesterday, but unlike yesterday the mood is different. at the junction of west-north and pennsylvania which was the epicentre of stop throe throwing looting and pushing. last night there was officers blogging access to west-north. officers were deployed to the square here. some of them behind me you see. what about last night. the police did what they said they would do. distrightly enforcing the curfew when it came into play at 10:00 p.m. there was smoke pepper balls and tear gas. i think the feeling is that it could all have been a lot worse. >> reporter: long time c

live from new york city, i'm randall pinkston. protestors are calling for more action to stop what seems like a spike in police shootings of african-american suspects. tomas drayton joins me now with more on what's happening nationwide. >> the march begins in philadelphia but the movement from new york to chicago to california. marshes want more accountability and transparency. we've seen these scenes across the country. there were 25 demonstrations yesterday alone. in chicago, 200 gathered at daily center demanding reform within the police department. five people were reportedly arrested. >> in oakland california signs read black and brown lives matter, hundreds of protestors marched blocking traffic on interstate 88. >> in los angeles the protests continued with many carrying signs and banners, 15 were arrested after block ago commuter train. >> in new york city, several hundred demonstrators marched toward police headquarters with reports of dozens arrested for blocking traffic there. please say an off duty police officer was a

randall pinkston is here with more. >> it's been called a flat out failure of journalism, the story called painful reading. the review, colombia university said the magazine failed to follow basic rules of reporting. >> sabrina wrote a story about rape on campus, using an alleged rape victim to illustrate the crisis. jacki said she was raped repeatedly by members of a u.v.a. fraternity and that she called for help. soon began to fall apart beginning with the washington post investigation, which found numerous discrepancies. in december, a month after the story was published rolling stone issued an apology on its website, and initiated the review. that was released sunday night and is sharply critical of the reporter and rolling stone. according to the report, three failures of reporting stand out they involved basic even routine journalistic practice, not special investigative effort. the reporter failed to corroborate the act and detail the account to the fraternity, which might have revealed problems with the allegations. she failed to get last student accused of leading the attack. the
