stephanie: i am stephanie ruhle. let's take you to the bulletin.op business stories of the morning. blackstone group is on a real estate buying tear. the largest real estate investor is spending more in $14 billion to buy general electric assets. most of those our office buildings in southern california, seattle, and chicago. it is also buying ge's assets in europe and a portfolio of commercial mortgages. in a separate deal, blackstone has agreed to buy xl for about $2 billion. they own a chain of shopping centers. investors are betting on the proposed deal with intel that it is not dead yet. earlier this week, the chip maker rejected the offer and shares are up nearly 5% in altera. a sign that altera could be pressured into reconsidering. computer sales have fallen to the lowest level since 2009. the market researcher says they fell more than 5% in the first quarter and people are using tablets and smartphones more to go online. plus after a surge lasted corporate spending on pcs has officially tailed off. hbo has just released its new stand alone

stephanie: i am stephanie ruhle. i do care about physical fitness, but as you know fitness trackers are sort of my -- my nightstand is a graveyard of trackers. erik: me to. stephanie: maybe this will help us get our groove back. breaking economic news to get to. the philly fed index is out. here is scarlet fu. >> this is a better-than-expected read on the manufacturing sector here from the philly fed. 7.5 when it, as were looking for slight uptick to 6 from the prior month's rita 5. this is the philadelphia fed business outlook. you can see this slight move up is from five to 7.5. we are long way off from the peak of the end of last year at 40. we've seen softness in the manufacturing sector take root because of the stronger dollar and a drop in oil prices. that seems to be improving for this particular index. earlier this week, the empire manufacturing number came in with a negative read. there is still a lot of debate over whether manufacturing has bottomed out and we're ready to see an uptick. as the dollar stabil

stephanie: i'm stephanie ruhle. we are also going to be talking to the winner of the masters. before we get to that, how about news. we will take you to the bulletin. the top stories of the morning. it is a good day for jp morgan shareholders. profits beat analysts estimates climbing to 12%. it is the first time that has happened. since 2010. the of jp morgan's investment bank said high volatility help to drive the quarter. shares in the company are up in early trading. good news for wells fargo. they beat estimates with lower rates. that helped buyers refinance debt. they are the most viable u.s. bank. investors do not seem impressed, shares are falling. retail sales fell short. it was the first gain in four months. the biggest advance in over a year. overall the figures show americans are being cautious with their wallets. even with savings from lower gas prices. it may take a bigger boost and wage growth before they loosened their purse strings and hit the shopping malls. the world's largest maker of health care products has first quarter profits that beat estimates. up 3%

stephanie: in what regions? david: if you look at resales they were much stronger in the northeast and the midwest and very slow in the south and about normal in the western part of the country. the resell picture follows almost directly with what new home building is. erik: do you find that the housing market is strongest on the coast and perhaps weaker in the center of the company? david: for the first time i don't think that is necessarily true if you look at the figures we just looked at. the place whither is a lot of activity is where the house prices are still relatively low and haven't recovered the losses they had which includes florida california, and the southwest. if you look at the coastal areas and if it is really close to the coast, the prices have gone up significantly. that slowing down the resales. erik: which markets are most price insensitive. in other words prices are rising but sales continue to increase? david: you look at silicon valley and san francisco. even if you look at the front rang
