if we reset we know that a train was struck by some sort of object, and that happened minutes before amtrak 188 derailed, and we have audio when police responded to the septa train after it was struck by an object. >> an unknown object made contact with that train shattering the windshield. we do not have an update on any injuries as we cannot make communication with the train. the train is going to be on the hill. >> reporter: that happened just minutes before amtrak 188 derailed. the assistant conductor not only did she hear that being reported, she believe she heard the amtrak engineer say his train was struck as well. they are looking at the windshields of 188, and they are going to be doing lab test to see if it was struck by a projectile and what angle it came from, and it was ordered amtrak take safety measures immediately, and they installed the safe tracks, and they are asking amtrak to do a risk assessment on all of the curves along the northeast corridor. lastly, they are ordering amtrak to increase speed limit signage along the tracks. we are told that if amtrak refuses this the

so what's running and what's not? amtrak philadelphia and new york city there's no service at this point. all service canceled and amtrak not saying when they're going to restore service in area but some service is running. it's on a modified schedule but between d.c. and philadelphia and between new york city and boston amtrak running on a modified service. new jersey transit is honoring amtrak tickets and that's between trenton and new york city, so between trenton and new york city, if you can get to trenton you can take new jersey transit with your amtrak ticket. this is new, also, coming into to us, atlantic city rail line right now between 30th street station and pennsauken will not run. so, now this is also impacting the atlantic city rail line. impacting septa as well. the trenton line uses the same tracks. the from end ton line -- trenton line will not run through the day. septa says it's possible it may not run through the rest of the week. it's yet to come how long the impacts are lasting at this point. chestnut h

we know that he has been an amtrak engineer since 2010. and before that he was an amtrak conductor. but not only officials here in philadelphia wants to speak to him, but the ntsb wants to speak to him as well as they piece together what happened in the minutes and seconds before this train derails. these are the tracks we're talking about. this is where it all happened. we know from the ntsb that this particular stretch of track where this derailment happened was not equipped with an automated speed control system which is commonly known as positive train control. we know there are other sections of the northeast corridor that does have this technology. but this specific section did not. and the ntsb firmly believes that had this technology been in place it could have essentially prevented this sort of thing from happening. what is positive train control? in simple terms if a train is going too fast this technology has the ability to slow the train down. and ntsb thinks that would have made all the difference here chris. >> right. and the simple reality is it could have made a diffe

and amtrak has had previous accidents that are miles and miles from the nearest hospital. there's some benefit to having a crash like this in an urban area. it's probably a little early to say that this crash was caused by poor upkeep or old equipment. that may be the case but it's a little early to say. and then there's this interesting 1995 derailment in palo verde. the sunset limited came off the tracks the tracks has been tampered with. there was a note left with an organization it may have been one crazy person called sons of the gestapo. one person was killed 12 injured, several seriously injured. the fbi never figured out who did it. but that was actual sabotage. there's a varieties here besides the fact that this is an old route, old trains old tracks. and we'll have to wait and see. >> you know there is something to what you said that happened in the city. and when something like this happens, the city of philadelphia really kicks in. we saw, remember the building explosion that happened i think it was two summers ago, in philadelphia. and i remember being there.
