scott paul you have recently written, and you wrote about president obama. when he was a senator running for the white house. president obama, barack obama said he'd get tough on currency but now with an opportunity to do something about it as president, he's changed his tune. what do you make of that mr. paul? >> well i'd like to see more of the barack obama of 2007 and a little less of what we're seeing today. if he was true to his words in 2007 i would add, if senator clinton is true to the words she spoke back in 2007 as well there would be no doubt that this process the tpa, the fast track authority and the agreement, the transpacific partnership would look a lot different than they are today. and that they would represent the interests of working people the challenge has been that and i think representative pokan pointed this out, it's about geopolitics. i think that's a flawed argument. it's about wall street and losing touch with working people across america. i would just add, the clarity calling for dealing with currency manipulation and trade deal

moments ago on fox news, scott walker joined in, taking issue with what paul said about isis. scott walker: i just think he's wrong about that. unfortunately. i respect senator paul on a lot of issues. i think there's a lot of good things about him but i think he's just wrong on this one, and it's one of those things where republican or democrat, if someone is saying something wrong, i will not criticize them personally, but i think there's a tendency for certain candidates to go after people on a personality basis. i think we should talk about the fact, and the fact are clear. mark: for people like chris christie or bobby jindal criticizing paul is part of what is called in political circles looking for a moment of strength. pretty much the same thing happened in the last sheet of republican nomination battles, if you don't remember. this is how republicans running for president then sought their own moments of strength, by slamming not rand paul, but his father ron paul. >> congressman paul is irresponsible. >> nothing could be more dangerous than the comments we just heard.

but he won't be the only person, rick santorum is likely to be in the race, ted cruz, scott walker, ben carson rand paul, all of them fighting for some element of the social conservatives. last time around in 2008 when he ran mike huckabee got 35% of very conservative self identified very conservative voters, same percentage rick santorum got in 2012. what is interesting to me is the challenge may not simply be from other people fighting in the social conservative space but the other candidates as well because in 2008 mike huckabee got 34% of the somewhat conservative, rick santorum got 19%. in 2008, mike huckabee got 22% of self identified moderates, 40% of women, 40% of those age 17 to 29. this time around with so many more candidates he will get squeezed on the social conservative side, other social conservatives and he could conceivably get squeezed on these other areas where he was able to do well in 2008 by candidates better able to occupy that space that he is right in his visit with john roberts, he is better known, doesn't need to spell his name has a folksy winning manner about him and will be

polling for the top tier, those who at 5%, 2%, 13% in the republican vote, your jeb bushes, scott walker, rand pauls, even ben carsons sort of hit that threshold. people like them, people know where they are. when you have ten counties below 5% in the margin of error and they're below that -- they're either at 1% or 2% or at zee oregon almost negative in a way. that's not how polling works, obviously, but they could statistically be at zero. so it's not possible to know what their support is. the parties are looking at and these networks are looking at money, so how much money they've raised, how many individual donors they have. how many members of congress have endorsed them or sitting republicans or sitting office holders. usually the way these work is that they decide who they want on stage and then they make the rules sort of to fit that, they sort of back build the rules to justify who they want on stage. >> i want to come back to the money question in a second. because i think that's important and i think it rubs me the wrong way and i'm not sure why. so i want to come back to the details on

even a small slice of the pie might matter. 21% for scott walker, and 13% for rand paul, and 12% for cruz and 10% for mike huckabee. let's compare this, though. 21% in the polls now. mike huckabee won iowa with 34%. scott walker could say i just have to grow a little bit. rick santorum won last time with just shy of 25% in a crowded field, and you don't need that big of a slice to win. let's move on in new hampshire. jeb bush gets the biggest slice, but only 15%. you can call him the leader, but can't call him the frontrunner. again, we will go around. you see the other slices of the pie, and some of them small and i call others medium at best. in 2012, mitt romney won with just shy of 40% of the vote, and paul second, and my question, steve, with a crowded field, doesn't take a lot. you don't need 50%, but should jeb bush be worried that he is at 5% in iowa and 15% in new hampshire? >> robert costa had an interesting question, where maybe they shouldn't be -- i am remembering in 2011 when newt gingrich was soaring in the polls, and so it's a little early and things can change. i wond

john: you think about rand paul, ted cruz, jeb bush, scott walker, mike huckabee -- that range of peoplewhich of those -- are there any of those you would find remotely close to acceptable as potential president? larry: i think if you are a climate denier, that disqualifies you to be president. rubio, who seem to have everything going for, all the right talking points. it troubles me somebody like him. i don't think -- if bush shoves enough money into this thing, i think he could get the nomination. i don't think in his wildest dreams he could beat hillary. he could never get away from his brother. as much as he would like to. they are too many questions to be answered and too many questions nobody has the answer for. this is really very unfair to bush, but my grandfather used to have a saying -- the apple does not fall very far from the tree. john: i know i asked you about your past endeavors to snoop around or trying to find information on these republicans. if you think about that field, who strikes you as being the most likely to have skeletons in their closet? larry: mike huckabee.

but among gop primary voters bush is getting 23%, marco rubio at 18%, and scott walker rand paul andow. ben carson chris christie and mike huckabee is at the bottom of the list tied with chris christie at 5%. what changes for him today? >> we have seen each candidate getting a bump with each announcement. it is important these are really early and we have a long way to go. but there is a little bit of tension focus and maybe a look by potential voters at the individual candidates as they launch which is why the launches have been important. we haven't been a fan of the pre-launch launch but that is what mike huckabee did coming on saying he would have this day. he is getting in the race. he has a loyal following especially in some place like iowa. that is problematic for someone like rick santorum who is going after the same voter. rather huckabee can gain that and transition from iowa remains to be seen. >> it will be fascinating watching them try to win over iowa and new hampshire. and in most cases it looks like they will go against hilary clinton but we don't know that for sure.
