let's send it to chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz with more details on this. glenn?this is a huge complex of storms so the tornado warning just covers a small portion of the area and sheena just got into the details on that. but there are many many counties under severe thunderstorm warnings and areas that are getting strong wind gusts. we have had reports of 67 mile an hour wind gusts from wilmington and 71 mile an hour wind gusts at philadelphia international. my rule of thumb is whatever the airport is saying for a maximum wind there's probably some place where it's even stronger. there very well may be some place in our area not too far from philadelphia getting hurricane force wind gusts right now. the severe thunderstorm warning continues until 6:30 for all of these areas in the yellow. that goes from southern chester county through new castle county in delaware from salem and gloucester and camden counties in new jersey. this is covering a very large area. another thing you can look at here this was a straight line of storms. now it's not. it is curved. you ca

i was talking to glenn earlier. glenn, all of a sudden you could see it headed our way. >> yeah.there was nothing on the radar at about 10:00, 11:00 in the morning as we were expecting, and then there it goes. within a couple of hours the radar was just lit up and getting stronger as we went through the day, and we had quite an afternoon. but nothing like that today. we've got a wet and chilly day. different type of day. we have more showers coming after today and a fairly cloudy week. i don't expect to see a whole lot of sunshine this week. and this is what we're going to be seeing a lot of. the low clouds cutting off the top of the highest buildings out there. 56 degrees in philadelphia. 60 miles an hour gusting to 20 miles an hour. and we're in the 50s across most of the area. 40s in the poconos. 60s farther to the south. even those areas are not necessarily going to be warming up a lot during the day today. nothing like yesterday. flash flood watch is going to expire at 6:00. the flood advisory will expire at 5:30. and we don't see anymore heavy rain in the southern sections.

good morning glenn. >> good morning. northern delaware has really been getting pounded over the last hour or two. that is moving into south jersey. we have a first alert out for not only what's happening now but for what's going to happen later today and again tomorrow. flood advisory for new castle county until 6:15. you can see on the wider view that cluster of thunderstorms in new castle county. they have been getting hit hard right along i-95 and just to the south of it and you can see crossing the delaware river, delaware bay into new jersey now now. getting some very heavy rain. to the northeast, philadelphia getting moderate rain. northern suburbs, very little. although they got their share last night. not everybody is getting it now. not everybody is going to get it. but the main threat that we have for any severe weather is for heavy rain for some of these tropical like downpours that are going to be occurring. 72 degrees at 6:00 a.m. with the showers and storms but we're going to have a lull as we go through th

but let's begin with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn?>> we just have a few hours left of this heat advisory for the urbanized areas around philadelphia corridor and the temperature and humidity combined made it feel like it was 100 degrees this afternoon. 93 degree temperature now, but look what the rain has done to pottstown and allentown, down into the 70s. that is of course just a temporary thing. temperature's going to go back up into the 80s soon. but it won't be going up into the 80s at the jersey shore. 73 in avalon 75 in beach haven. it's been in the 70s all afternoon. with the wind coming in off the ocean. now, we have one cluster of storms near harrisburg but just a couple of them in our area and this one appears to be weakening quite quickly. went through northern chester county and into upper montgomery county. there's a warning associated with it right over upper providence and like i said much less in the way of lightning strikes. this one is still holding together. this has caused the rain in allentown and severe thunderst

let's begin with glenn hurricane schwartz. glenn. >> in some cases the lack of rain increases the flood threat because the ground is so hard that the rain just runs right off as you can see over the past three hours the storms moving through especially in delaware. first let's take a look to the northeast. some rain up towards the trenton area and the northern side of philadelphia things are quiet. wow, northern delaware just really getting pounded with showers and thunderstorms. look at how heavy that rain is right along 95 i-95 near newark and especially glasgow, christiana, tremendous amounts of rain. that's going to be the main threat during the day and into tomorrow and the reason for the first alert. so showers and storms as we go through this morning, but there's going to be a bit of a lull. once this area in delaware moves through there will be a lull. that's not going to be the end of storms for the day today. we should start popping up again around noon and becoming very heavy across parts of the area. >>> now let's

let's get to meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz talk about the rain today. glenn?s a lighter type of rain or thunderstorms. it doesn't let the temperature go up very much. look at the site of citizens bank park. phillies supposed to be playing tonight. well there may be some rain. definitely going to be chilly but it's not going to be real heavy rain. as you can see on the radar, things are pretty light especially compared to yesterday. and then north and west of allentown, a little bit more rain there. we'll watch that area and see if it grows later on this afternoon. some of the computer models show that as we go into the afternoon hours. the radar gets a little bit more covered as you can see there by 4:00 during the afternoon rush. that may be wet as well. temperatures, if anything are going down. it's down to 53 in philadelphia. 51 in reading. it's not going to warm up a whole lot during the day today. only 56 at 7:00 a.m. still in the 50s for much of the morning as the rain kind of expands. more with the seven day coming up. >>> people across the area waking

glenn? >> yeah. if we start getting a little bit warmer, a little bit more humid, our body can adjust to it a little better than this big jump we took from yesterday to today. that flag is indicating a southwest wind bringing in warmer air and more humid air. that's why there's a heat advisory in effect from noon to 8:00 p.m. tomorrow for the highly urbanized areas around philadelphia, and of course that means that it is going to be hotter and more humid, when you combine the two, the feels-like temperature will get to near 100 during the afternoon and we also have a possible heat wave if we hit 90 again on saturday. that will be a close call. we are in the low 90s now in most areas, even 82 in mt. pocono. 90 degrees in georgetown and in dover, delaware. as we go through the evening, the temperature's not going to drop as much with that wind continuing to bring up warm and humid air, so by 10:00, it's still 83 degrees. we'll see how hot it's going to get and when we are going to see a break

let's begin with chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz and the forecast. it's going to be a lot colder today. >> yes many places got into the 80s yesterday. we may not get into 60 degrees today. it's still damp and we have the flash flood watch up until 6:00 a.m. for a good bit of the area. the flood advisory in effect until 5:30. now for some of these southern counties it's some areas still getting some localized flooding. you can see with the radar things are quieting down. we're seeing lighter rain and that is an improvement over what we have seen last night and into today. look at the temperatures in the 50s across most of the area. dover and wildwood the only places in the 60s. prepare for this. you're going to need a coat today in most of the area. just damp and chilly. temperatures barely getting above 60 in parts of the area. more rain coming in the seven day in a few minutes. "nbc 10's" matt delucia is in south jersey where the most rain is falling. he's live in hammondon. what have you got there, matt? >> glen we are on pratt street in hammonton.

glenn? >> some of those storms have moved into part of our area. we issued the first alert earlier today, feeling this was going to be happening later today and tonight. we have the chance of severe thunderstorms, the main threat continues to be in our pennsylvania counties and damaging winds, a possibility along with hail. we still have the possibility of some localized flooding too. a tornado watch in this area in yellow until 10:00 tonight. that has now been extended to include bucks, montgomery and chester counties. severe thunderstorm warnings in the orange areas and you can see there's a tremendous amount of lightning stretching from that first line that's getting closer to allentown all the way down into maryland and virginia. there we go. there's allentown, berks county right here lancaster county just getting into it right now. this orange area that is a severe thunderstorm warning and this is a very strong cell here. that area includes part of berks county part of lehigh county. th

glenn, we could see rain return tonight? >> that's right, renee. it's getting closer and closer by the hour. the whole area seems to be growing, too. the clouds that's a foregone conclusion. they're still around. the temperature is still well below average. the clouds continue to thicken as they move up to the north. and here is the rain. more and more of it across delaware and south jersey. getting closer and closer to philadelphia. some of it getting a little bit heavier, too. in parts of delaware and especially in cape may county right at the shore. it's one heavy shower near sea isle city and that's an indication the whole atmosphere is getting more moist. that east wind keeps the clouds in keeps the temperatures down. as you can see, we do have the threat of some rain tonight. more on the timing of that and the weekend, of course, with the seven day in a few minutes. >>> the debate is heating up over who will pay to fix the philadelphia school budget crisis. mayor nutter wants property owners to pay 9% more but today city council rejected that

what is the situation like now, glenn? are continuing to watch some of these showers come through the poconos and make its way down through eastern pennsylvania. we are seeing improving conditions here in camelback. we just showed this picture to you a little while ago where it was raining pretty hard. that's one of the areas that has the flood advisory in effect until 5:30 partly because all the rain they had last night. it doesn't take that much rain to produce flooding. fortunately, today's showers are moving pretty quickly and not going over the same spots. there was a big storm that came across parts of the jersey shore. you saw some of that video, produced even some wind damage in ventnor, and otherwise, just a few other showers. this is the line that we're watching coming right into parts of northampton county that got hit so hard last night. but at least it's moving rapidly. we'll see when it clears out and how long it's going to stay hot with the seven-day in just a few minutes. >> the first alert weather team cov

let's go to glenn hurricane schwartz.live in mantua township with a first look at the damage. >> earlier glenn looked at downed trees to see if there was any sign they were knocked down by a tornado. >> glenn, earlier, just as jackie pointed out, you pointed to evidence of straight line winds. is that still the case here? >> yes, it is. everywhere across the county we took storm force 10 for two hours, driving everywhere didn't find any significant damage of a tornado. winds can cause a lot of damage. this is a brand new subdivision, it looks like it's beautifully built, nice and expensive. and yet this property is condemned, why? this is the garage. how flimsy is that? look how light it is. so the garage is the weak spot. the wind finds the weak spot of the house, it comes in through the garage and it blew out this wall. so you think, oh, a tornado had to do that. a 60 mile an hour wind couldn't do that. look at all these houses the siding is torn up. we have one tree after another after another, it's a straight line win

>> that's right, glenn.we have gotten a lot of reports downingtown, honeybrook seeing a lot of very heavy rain lot of 911 calls reported in chester county now. heavy rain along with damaging wind. regardless of whether or not we do have a tornado on the ground which would be a radar indicated tornado at this point, damaging winds, that's going to be the number one factor. i will take the radar off really quick. here you can still see the tornado warning. aside from that this storm no doubt is extremely strong. winds near 60 miles an hour or more which like we have been saying these are very dangerous winds. the tornado warning has not been extended at this point. the storm itself is still very intense. as far as the organization to give us a tight rotation which would eventually be giving us the tornado warning, that is still yet to be seen. it does appear to be stretching out. multiple reports now of trees down. that was in honeybrook in chester county. this is why a lot of 911 calls are coming in. lot of t

glenn? >> renee, we showed you a house right next door to this one that was condemned in the 5:00 hour why did this one survive? it's damaged. i showed you the flimsy garage on the other one, this isn't great, it's insulated. that helps save part of this house. look at all the siding that's gone and part of the top floor. why did that happen? look at this siding. this is pathetic. i have paper towels stronger than that. the other reason that these houses were damaged is an open area right here. if you look real closely, you can see the tree damage and moving in this direction. an open field, got the full force of the wind here. these houses actually helped protect the houses back there from getting more damage. so if you're in the right place, you can be protected by another house, if you're in the wrong place, can you have a little extra wind that makes it even worse. >> what's the best place to ride out these kinds of storms. >> well you have to get to the lowest floor, this gives you an e

nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz with his first alert forecast. glenn? >> yeah, found one part of our area that actually has nice, sunny conditions. lots of sunshine. but most of the area is still cloudy and still on the chilly side. the sunshine has helped push downtown to 69 degrees. mt. poconos is 65. and wildwood that's as warm as it's been all day. the wind coming in off of that chilly ocean. and look at the cloud cover from philadelphia southward, gets thicker as you go south, more sunshine to the north. all right. which way is going to win? is it going to be the southern moisture winning or the northern drier air? looks like the southern moisture. that certainly appears to be moving to the north. not heavy rain or anything but it's indication of some changes that are going to be taking place through this evening. i think it's going to start getting a little damp around here. if nothing else, just a little bit of drizzle. tell you when the sun will return along with the warmer weather with the 7-day in a few minutes. >> thank you, glenn. >>> life i

nbc10 first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz here with the forecast. glenn, people dealing with the aftermath of last night's storm, but at least they have take nice day to do it. >> things are comfortable. nowhere near 95 degrees. nowhere near feeling like 101 like yesterday. blue skies. we don't have rain in the forecast until tomorrow night. but there is likely to be some more rain. it's a dry day today. there's nothing on radar. hardly any clouds in the sky. but the next system is in illinois already. there's nothing severe but there may be some heavy rain in parts of the area. by tomorrow night. and this is what happened late yesterday. there's this line of thunderstorms. as it came through the philadelphia area see it started bowing, as we call it. and when you have a bow echo, see this again, a little bit rounded. the wind right at the bow there. that's the strongest wind. that's where most of the damage was. from chester county through delaware county through gloucester county and out toward ocean county. well, right now things are pretty quiet

nbc10's matt delucia is live with us in center city but let's begin with meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. what can you tell us? >> the temperature is coming up closer and closer to the 90-degree mark. we have a first alert weather day for a combination of factors. the extreme heat humidity and then the thunderstorms. today's 90-plus will make it an official heat wave. we expect some severe thunderstorms this afternoon. the greatest threat would be damaging winds. the high risk today covers much of the area so even though we now have a severe thunderstorm watch that does not cover delaware or extreme south jersey, future watches may. this is recent and goes until 7:00 tonight. this is for the potential for severe thunderstorms in a part of that area. now, we have one leading area of storms. that is weakening as it heads towards the poconos. there was a lot of lightning with it. less now. there's still some very heavy rain. and these are the times, as it comes into the pocono areas, looks like it's going to stay north of the lehigh valley. this area back to the west this is more

let's throw it over to glenn.glenn, it's warmer today. >>> the temperature barely getting up to 70 degrees. the average high temperature now is all the way up to 80. so even though it got a little bit milder than it was a couple days ago, it's still 10 degrees below average. kind of a cloudy chill out there but the showers, they'll be returning. some of them coming tonight. a brighter weekend across the area. that will also help the temperatures go up. pretty overcast here outside the station. not a whole lot of wind. what wind there is coming right in off the ocean. east wind at 14 miles an hour in philadelphia. 67 degrees right now. and remember back on sunday 92 degrees. it's only 58 for the high tuesday. so far, we're 70 degrees. that's as far as we got yesterday. we're not going to go any higher than that today because we're already down to 67. 68 in allentown. well, we're not even seeing sunshine in those northern areas like we did yesterday. it's still in the upper 50s in southern delaware and extreme south

glenn? >> yeah that's right. anybody who has been inside all day, well you might be a little surprised if you head outside because the humidity has really dropped. it is going to be a beautiful night. it's not going to last very long. we are dry through at least thursday morning but we do have a potential heat wave in the forecast. it's not that hot now but a west wind bringing in drier air. we're in the 80s across much of the area 85 in philadelphia. we have been up to 86 so far, 83 degrees in trenton. we even have a west wind right at the shore so avalon's up to 83 degrees and lewis is up to 83 degrees right now. now, we don't have anything on radar. there are one or two isolated showers a couple hours ago but the drier air is starting to come in. there's a big area of nothing. that means lots of sunshine on the way. as we go through the evening hours, we are going to see really nice conditions. by 10:00, we are in the 70s, again, low humidity during the night tonight and tomorrow but the big changes including

nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here to break down the timing of the rest of the rain we're expecting this weekend. >> that rain is falling in parts of the area right now is really unrelated to what is going to hit us tomorrow. that's the reason for the first alert weather day. we have a flood watch for saturday afternoon and saturday night for much of the area. 1 to 3 inches of rainfall expected. had some strong to severe thunderstorms in parts of the area like delaware and extreme south jersey. we have a flood watch in effect from philadelphia westward and now flood advisories and even now a flood watch warning for a part of montgomery county until 1:30 in the morning, even part of the northwestern sections of philadelphia we have some showers that developed and then have really not moved over the last two or three hours. and it just keeps dumping heavier and heavier rain over providence township in montgomery county and you can see right near the schuylkill expressway in upper and lower marion township. this is the area that's going to nail us t

standing by to talk about that is chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn?at's right, we have issued this first alert for tomorrow for the combination of this extreme heat and the resulting thunderstorms that could be severe in at least parts of the area. the near record heat causing the heat advisory for urbanized areas from trenton through philadelphia and wilmington. a chance of severe storms and the greatest threat in those storms is going to be for damaging winds. we are not expecting a lot of rain other than just perhaps a short period of time. it's the gusty winds that's the big issue. it's hot but dry today but there is some pretty strong weather developing now just around cleveland and east of detroit going back towards chicago, and that is the system that is moving our way for tomorrow putting much of the area in at least a slight risk for some severe storms. the highest risk is up in new england, as you see in that area in orange. as we go through the morning hours tomorrow we don't have any issue with showers or storms. it will just be getting ho

. >> nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz joins us now. no wonder philly schools decided on early dismissal for tomorrow. >> yeah. it's not just the temperature as usual, it's the humidity combined and the two combined will be probably as high as about 97 degrees, 98 degrees tomorrow. one area got a little bit more relief, the pocono mountains, and they are also getting some showers in that area right now. we can see the basic radar showing so much activity right around new york city. there's another cluster that's headed toward washington and in between, we're in kind of a lull. that's why there's not a lot of showers around. there's the one that's pretty significant, northampton county just east of allentown. you can see how it's moving toward the southeast and go right into near the easton area. but the temperatures now are in the upper 80s, even hotter tomorrow. tell you how hot and how long it's going to stay that way with the seven-day in a few minutes. >>> philadelphia public schools will dismiss early at noon tomorrow because of th
