> berkeley is taking action to prevent future disasters like last month's deadly balcony collapse. kpix 5's christian hartnett joins us live in berkeley where the city council has approved tougher building regulations. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a lot of people were at that meeting last night to voice their opinions and after a lot of discussion with the city council, they finally made a decision to tighten up regulations so that a tragedy like this one never happens again. the city council passed the new inspection laws unanimously. other regulations will still need to be decided upon such as the use of steel reinforcement in all balconies constructed in berkeley. for now in the next six months, all balconies and weather exposed elements on all properties in the city will need to be inspected. a follow-up inspection will happen every three years after that. the proposal initially called for the follow-up inspection to happen every five years. but an attorney representing one of the students killed in the collapse argued it needed to happen more frequently. >> the rea
