cairo street. now concerns over the expanding reach of the terror group. we have cnn's jomana karadsheh in jordan. jomana this was a newer: christine, a lot of concern about this latest attack that officials in egypt are describing as unprecedented. they say about 300 militants involved in the assault. they attacked several checkpoints using car bombs and different kinds of heavy and medium weapons. isis affiliate, the state of sinai claimed responsibility saying it attacked 15 military checkpoints. it said it used three suicide bombers. the battles, christine, lasted for hours, turning the area into a battle zone. civilians trapped in the area. hours after fighting the egyptian military used air strikes and calling in the air force and managed to kill at least 100 militants and regain control of the area. as you mentioned, serious concern about this new development in the northern sinai where the egyptian authorities struggled to contain the insurgency for the past couple of years. a lot of concern of a shift of tactics here. perhaps a new chapter in the battle against the isis affiliate in the region. >> jomana karad
