we lived in the town of oak ridge. this did not serve the people who worked there during the day when they were at work, there were medical facilities out at the plant sites but the people who lived in the town which at that time was mostly the families of people who were building and many of the scientists that were working out at the lab and they would go by bus out to their work sites during the day but then come back to the city -- to oak ridge. so we not only took care of emergency -- what an ordinary emergency room does taking care of emergencies, we were the medical -- only medical center in the area except for knoxville, which was 20 miles away. so it was a very, very busy place. we saw a lot of not only emergencies but sore throats strep throats as young families moved in ear aches and all the things that go with raising a family because the houses were being built very quickly very fast. comments would be made on the way to would. when i went out to work the street was completely filled. there were 20 houses

but i did stay in oak ridge and state in the clinic because many people continue to stay in oak ridgeecause research was being done and although there was a 20 i'm 75,000 people living there -- there was at one time 75,000 people living there, i wanted to go back to chicago. -- [indiscernible] but i was a charge nurse for the doctor who was the director. and my husband, who is a research assistant and has a job -- had a job as a research assistant, and had just returned from four years in the military, had some -- came to my department and it turns out we grew up about 10 miles apart in a little town in iowa. and i mean a very small town. and we had never met before, but anyway, that was the beginning of a friendship and we got married about a year later. and he continued to work there as a research assistant finished his degree. he had served four years in the navy and graduated from the university of tennessee. we married and lived there and he went to work for the commission. and when they were transit up to washington dc in 1958, our family moved up appear and, of course, we were

our mola lenghi joins us live from the scene in white oak. what have you learned? >> reporter: first an incredible fall to have survived. the 4-year-old boy fell from an eighth story window at white oak towers to the grassy area below on the ground level, still taped off with the police tape. that is where the boy fell. you can even see the mesh screening that fell out of the window to the ground with the boy. the 4-year-old was rushed to the hospital with what are believed to be nonlife threatening injuries. one witness who said he didn't see the fall but saw the 4-year- old on the ground tell me the child was moving around -- tells me the child was moving around, seemed alert, crying obviously in a lot of pain, but he was conscious after the fall. authorities are still investigating and it's unclear exactly how the boy fell out of this window. >> we'll be following this one. >>> also in montgomery county tonight crews and residents cleaning up from an impromptu flood that snarled traffic and spilled into homes. the water began flowing after a 68-year-old pipe bur

that sighting eventually led officers here to oak ridge mall where they arrested the suspect in a parking garage, just before 1:00 this morning. this is the man they arrested. 30-year-old martin martinez. he's behind bars in santa clara county jail tonight accused of murder. he's suspected of killing five people inside this modesto home. police discovered their bodies yesterday after receiving a request to check on the family. >> we have identified that all of the victims inside are females. all of them are related. and the children are from ages 6 months to 6 years. >> reporter: police say martinez knew at least two of the victims. >> we have also determined there is a past relationship between martin and one of the victims inside, and one of the children is his. >> reporter: but investigators say they're still trying to determine the motive for the massacre. last night martinez was named as a person of interest. police launched a statewide search for him and the red lincoln navigator he was last seen driving. around 10:00 last night an alert san jose police officer spotted the red navig

the spca found the dogs during a raid at the home in west oak lane this afternoon, five of the animals were chained to a wall one was dead. the spca says the chains were heavier than the dogs. the animals were living in filth. >> just the conditions alone of the way they were kept when heavy chains separated them. it was horrendous. >> also inside the home a snake. in this tank the spca took all the animals away the authorities found drug paraphernalia as well. >>> residents left thirsty, hungry and in soiled diapers for extended periods of time. those are among the allegations authorities are making against the nursing home chain with facilities here in our area. the pennsylvania attorney general's office today filed a lawsuit against golden living centers, 14 of the centers are named in the suit among them this one in philadelphia's west oak lane section and another in phoenixville. the suit says the company failed to provide even the most basic care to residents. the company has not commented. >>> a new lawsuit further clouding the future of the old show boat casino tonight. glenn s

it's no surprise lots of numbers of tourists are drawn to oak na. last year more than 7 million people visited. >> i come from taiwan. >> love it. love it. very nice. >> reporter: oak na way is enjoying a hotel construction boom. this hotel will open next year. more than 20 large hotels have been built in the past five years. but the resorts have a big problem. the labor shortage is serious at bigger resort hotels. it's especially difficult to find top quality housekeeping staff. retaining workers is now a major challenge for the hotel industry industries. she's part of the hotel staff. the firm needs 100 more to meet the demand of its hotel clients. but its latest round of hiring yielded only about a dozen new workers. >> translator: we're trying our best to recruit new staff, but we're falling short. besides veteran workers are retiring so the labor shortage is affecting our business seriously. >> reporter: the company is running shuttle buses that dispatch workers to resort hotels to keep their numbers up. the commute can take as long as an hour.

more on our breaking news out of west oak lane this morning. a heartless crime.other and her one year-old daughter stabbed critically. their attacker still at large. cherry greg from our sister station kyw news radio 1060 is live for us this morning outside of st. christopher's where that little girl was taken. how is she doing this morning. >> reporter: good morning, nicole. both that baby girl and her mother are in critical condition this morning. police say a man stabbed the little girl in the chest. stabbed her mother multiple times as she held the baby girl in her arms. police say it all happened just before 12:30 sunday morning, that is when a man stabbed a 37 year-old mother, as she held her one year-old baby in her arms. police arrived on the scene in the 1900 block of dallas street, to find the mother, with multiple slash wound and the baby girl a single stab wound to the chest. both mother and daughter were rushed to einstein hospital where the mother rein mains in critical condition. the one year-old girl was then transported to st. christopher's hospi
