and the confederate army is foraging and scavenging throughout these areas of southern pennsylvania. pennsylvania has largely been untouched by the war until this point. as we can see from the map, one of the great ironies when these two forces meet up with one another, the southerners approach gettysburg from the north and the northerners approach gettysburg from the south. gettysburg was a very enterprising, bustling little town. and as far as 19th-century society goes it was fairly , progressive compared to others. it had a college, a lutheran seminary and two female academies, which was rare for a relatively rural community. what is really going for it is the road system that builds up here. there are 10 major roads that intersect. in the years leading up to the war, these roads brought prosperity and travelers. it brought money. in july of 1863, instead of bringing prosperity, it will bring a war. up until this point, it seemed everything had been going well for gettysburg. they had new infrastructure and all of these educational aspects and the railroad come in. it is only one o

southern pennsylvania, parts of west virginia. so far, we have not seen any tornado reports out of pennsylvania, but nearly, pennsylvania is kind of the center of action for most of the storm activity this afternoon. what we've seen on doppler radar looks to me to be guard variety showers. look in the left-hand corner. no lightning strike. cannot have a thunderstorm without lightning. or so i think. those storms will continue to track from west to east. we still have a lot of heat and humidity going on and some sunshine, so it's possible we could get showers and storms later this afternoon ahead of this evening through this cold front, but so far so good for most of our area with the biggest threat continuing to the north. see the cluster of storms coming across areas approaching winchester now? maybe mother nature will give us a break this afternoon. 90 degrees right now. no break on the heat and humidity. 94 in fredericksburg. once we get through the night and once the storms and and the front comes through, we'll be in really fi

you see the showers in southern pennsylvania and west virginia. the stuff coming across the district in toward privilege george's on route -- prince george's on route 50 in annapolis, light sprinkles. this goes out into fairfax as well. tracking these light showers. they were coming up toward dulles and sterling. this is just real light stuff along route 50 there coming out of areas in prince william county, loudoun county over toward western fairfax. the activity in west virginia a little more concentrated. this is moving east and a little bit heavier toward mathias. these are heavier downpours that look like they're going to pass across or over woodstock. i'm tracking these. they're moving east 30 to 35. luray about 12:36. into warrenton around 1:30. if they hold together, close to 2:00 in manassas and they look like they've taken more of a track toward southern areas than northern areas. our future cast for the afternoon shows the best chance for the heavier showers and potential thunderstorms could be south of us. drier air arrives tonight and

we have the highest risk of severe weather right in our pennsylvania counties although there is some risk in southern delaware and parts of new jersey but the farther west you are, the closer we are to this tornado watch that's issued right now until 9:00 lancaster county westward. this watch may very well be extended during the next hours, stay tuned for that and we'll see what part of the area that covers and the potential for some tornadoes in the area. the conditions are more favorable. that's what the watch means. doesn't mean there are any actually out there yet. you can see there are storms out there in the middle of pennsylvania, western pennsylvania. there have been some reports of some damage. you can see it's all moving to the east and there's no doubt there's going to be storms in the area but let's check out the timing here. by 6:00 everything is still pretty much to the west. so things are slowing down a little bit and so by the time everything gets toward the shore, we may lose a lot of the heating of the day. that's why the threat is bigger in pennsylvania than at the jersey shore. lo

you can see parts of pennsylvania, new york also into parts of southern new england you do have the flash potential today. really the threat is not so much rainfall total we're expecting from the storm system but there is a lot of moisture in the atmosphere. so some storms will produce a lot of heavy rain in a short amount of time. rainfall rates could exceed an inch per hour. that will be a concern out there. here is a look at totals we're expecting. locally more than three inches of rain will be possible in some areas especially upstate new york. the other concern is risk for severe weather. marginal risk out west, across rockies and parts of the plains. mid-atlantic we do have a risk for severe weather. enhanesed severe weather risk has been issued by storm prediction center across eastern pennsylvania, parts of maryland. the concern that we have threat not only for damaging winds and flash flooding but even some tornadoes out here. heads up state college, philadelphia new york city. new york city, you're out of higher tornado risk. warnings throughout the day in parts of new jersey ma

look at double scan live radar especially southern new jersey and central parts of delaware and one passing through parts of delaware county in western pennsylvania as we look close at double scan live radar, bridgeton across 49 and eventually passing over 59 expect the downpours as they move to the north and east at 25 miles per hour. only three lightning strikes most of are confined near smyrna on the southern end of these downpours, not seeing a tremendous amount of rain as they pass to the north and east. it's generally southern and central new jersey seeing the rain this afternoon. what to expect through the overnight hours tonight, feeling tropical out there with the scattered downpours, you can get between 1 and 3 inches as the downpours passover your community that can quickly pond water on the roadways but it will be more than a misthan a hit here this evening. double scan though, as we look wider to the west, there is low pressure near kansas city, the rain along with that from chicago to cincinnati, this will race to the north tomorrow and south during the peak heating of the day, it could lead to severe weather in the late afternoon a

pennsylvania. a little more sunshine in some other parts of the area but it's pretty warm in central and southern delaware and extreme south jersey with temperatures into the mid-80s. just to give you an idea of the contrast usually we see a lot of the contrast from shore to inland. it isn't. it's 85 at north wildwood because of the west wind. the land breeze during the day tomorrow makes a big difference rather than the sea breeze. the main threat during the afternoon, if any, is localized flooding because of those small but very intense showers that may be developing. just some light showers around right now. very little activity but we have seen sprinkles in and around the philadelphia area. there's more activity back to the west right now. nothing severe at the moment nothing threatening at the moment. as the day goes on computer models are showing an increase in the number of showers. and a little bit of intensity, too. those little red dots there, those are small but very heavy showers with some real downpours with them. there's a lot of moisture in the atmosphere atmosphere. you can see a lot aroun

pennsylvania and offshore through south jersey. heavy downpours right now are moving. they're actually leaving new castle -- or leaving cecil county in northeastern maryland and heading into northern new castle county in delaware and southern chester county is seeing heavier rainfall. has been lightning and thunder but that's starting to die down right now. you can see some spots where it's really coming down in southern chester county. the showers extend to the southeast. it's not just the new guarden area that's see something of the heavier rainfall. scattered showers for wilmington and you can see the wet weather into philadelphia as well. future weather, hour by hour forecast shows that line of storms at 9:00 this morning into central new jersey and the trend toll area. there's a possibility of storms in philadelphia. we'll get a break around 11:00 this morning for most of the area. but we'll be watching the radar, the possibility of more showers early this afternoon. that's 1:00. we could see thunderstorm development later this afternoon as well. keep an umbrella handy. won't be an all-day rainfall but threat for the entire day. 70s for the pocono mountains, low 80s for allentown and wakertown. occasional showers for
