i'm peggy bunker. >> i'm terry mcsweeney.n a statewide search of a man of killing five people in modesto. the search ended in san jose when police arrested the alleged killer in a parking lot at oakridge mall in the valley. that's where marianne favro joins us now with details on how officers managed to track this suspect down. marianne? >> terry, last night a san jose police officer spotted the suspect's red lincoln navigator and was able to track him down. he was parked inside this parking lot at oak ridge mall and he was arrested just before 1:00 this morning. this is the man they arrested. 30-year-old martin martinez. he's behind bars in santa clara county jail tonight accused of murder. he's suspected of killing five people inside this modesto home. police discovered their bodies yesterday after receiving a request to check on the family. >> we have identified that all of the victims inside are females. all of them are related, and the children are from ages 6 months to 6 years. >> reporter: police say martinez knew at l

nbc bay area's terry mcsweeney is live in gilroy. we can see behind you.ke there and it's still really hot outside. >> it's hot outside and the smoke is not going up into the air as it often does in fires. it's going up a certain amount and sticking right there and spreading out. as you can see here in the streets of gilroy i'm at 7th and roseanne if you're familiar with the si city. you look down the street you can get a very good idea just how smokey it is. it is this way from where the fire is maybe eight, ten miles south of gilroy and the smoke has been burn for three hours now, plenty of time to move. it's moved up here. but it's not going up into the air, it is just sitting down. i think we have some shots from above of the aerials of the fire burning. you mentioned 50 acres. it's been going for three hours. no homes threatened. i can tell you that the -- where it's burning, it's really wide open spaces. the concern down there and you will see it if you're heading south or north on 101, be careful for low smoke. over 101 it's become a traffic hazard

terry mcsweeney has the night off tonight. volunteers are searching for the san francisco teacher who has been missing for more than a week. ed cavanaugh was last seen on friday. he was dirt biking with a friend in georgetown and decided to continue on his own. he is an avid outdoorsman. he teaches students wilderness skills. hive in down high school where he teaches. this is really a major search effort. friends are in eldorado county to search. friends are telling us, ed cavanaugh is an experienced dirt bike rider. 46 years old, a well liked high school teacher in high school. on july 17 he went for a ride in the forest around the rock kriel trail system southeast of georgetown. and he the friend parted ways and cavanaugh handle been seen since. friends said it took a while to determine that he needed to be found because he is off for the summer. but family and friends say they want to know he is safe. >> he is such an outdoorsman. and he is you know at home in this land. but we're worried about his medical state. >> one fri
