always remember what a holocaust survivor who told another woman he said to her i can't watch holocaust movies or read books about them because it's too sad. the survivor said, don't expect me to pat you on the back. if we could live it, you can watch it. there is so much wisdom in this book and not my wisdom but there is. the interviews, it's so amazing what they wrote about and as i go through now some of those excerpt you will see the wisdom that comes out of it he this book was prompted by revolting despicable anti-semitism in france epitomized by the antics of the so-called comedian. that camera in the end father, a french mother and he has one skit where he ridicules the holocaust and later he makes fun of an innocent frenchmen who was kicked out tortured and murdered only because he was jewish. and the audiences roared with laughter. it's on youtube, you can see them. you cannot say that his -- after the holocaust is justified at this late coming. he says all these things when he wasn't even there and i think the best answer i could give him would be in the words of those who can

my research involved polish material, material from russia, lithuanian archives, archives at the holocaust museum here, individual interviews, last eyewitnesses, last survivors, and there were dead ends, and then something would happen, and i would start again. there were many surprises along the way. >> host: just give us a taste, one surprise that you found. >> guest: so early on i went to the holocaust museum in d.c. i'd asked for, you know, i was completely inexperienced. poetry is what i teach, so i had 200 microfiche reels waiting for me. now i can speak a little bit of german, a tiny bit of polish -- i'm from the midwest, that's my only excuse, and a bad one, for not knowing more languages. but anyway, i took four microfiche reels, they were captured german records during the occupation in lithuania that had originally been part of the soviet trove of archival material, and then the soviets had returned it to lithuania, and the lithuanians had given it to the holocaust museum. so i knew, you know, the selling of town where my -- the spelling of the town where my grandfather was base
