nic, good to have you with us. nic, tell us about today. i'm sure this is a day these men will never forget. >> reporter: i'm sure it won't be. they went in to the presidential palace here just behind me. spencer stone led them with his arm still heavily bandaged in a sling from where the attacker used a box cutter to attack his hand. the french president wanting to thank these men before they went home to their one country. spencer stone has described the graphically way they brought down the attacker and the struggle. this is what he said. >> i turned around and saw he had what looked to be an ak-47. it looked like it was jammed or wasn't working. he was trying to charge the weapon. alek hit me on the shoulder and said let's go. ran down and tackled him. we hit the ground. alek came up and grabbed the gun from his hand and i put him in a chokehold. he seemed to pull more weapons left and right. pulled out a handgun. alek took that. he took out a box cutter and he started jabbing me with that. we let go. all three of us started punching hi

nic robertson is standing by. nic, what a day for france. just extraordinary., this could have ended so differently. >> reporter: more than 500 people on the train and more than 300 bullets for the gun. that puts it in a stark and dark perspective. he said that they were an example for all, a source of inspiration and he really has tried to draw there. he said we are not weak as a society faced with terrorism we are strong when we stand together. he talked about the french, british, and americans working together on the train and the strength that that brings. he said that the security services will get together with the transport services in france and will address this issue. but he also said, and i think he is really trying to draw on the courage and the inspiration that everyone here is seeing from these young men, that we all have a responsibility, if faced by these -- by something like this we have a responsibility to do something. we drew on the words of anthony sadler who at the press conference was asked what is your message from this and he said his m

senior international correspondent nic robertson is joining us from paris. nic, a senior european official is telling cnn that the suspect has been identified and that apparently he was on a list of suspicious people because of activity that he had engaged in. what more are investigators willing to say about him? >> reporter: well, we know from spain and the south, france, these are all countries that he had lived in. he was on the sort of watch list, if you will, for counterterrorism officials because he was associating with radical islamists. precisely what is telling the french police at this time, we don't precisely know. but the picture that is being built up from counterterrorism officials tells us that this is someone that they will consider potentially very dangerous. this is someone that they consider may have very, very useful information for them. one of the reasons for that is that he went to turkey in may this year, came back two months later. is believed to have associated with french isis members in turkey. not clear if he got to join up with

nic, a second explosion today. the suspect in the yellow t-shirt, what's the latest?eporter: police say they've got about ten days' worth of cct v foot a.j. to go through. this was from the original blast yesterday. there's a potential now for the police perhaps to hone their investigation a little more, but it's going to expand at the same time because that second blast, although it injured no one today, cctv cameras in the area may help the police. the police say it was a dlb r deliberate act of terrorism. they say at the moment they don't have enough information to go on to know if the person in the yellow t-shirt was a thai national or a foreigner. the concern is for the thai authorities that two blasts two days in a row, no one caught, that this person or persons are still on the loose. but at the moment the man in the yellow shirt with the dark rimmed glasses with the backpack then seen without that heavy backpack, that is the main person that they're looking for at the moment. but again that second blast today may help provide some more clues. >> i want to ask

nic robertson is following the investigation in lille, france.a has details on the american men being praised for saving lives. nic, we know this investigation has been opened by the belgians. what else do we know? >> reporter: well, we have also heard from the french interior minister today says the belief at the moment is the suspect, the attacker is moroccan, a relatively young man and they they believe he may have been living in spain last year and belgium this year. the train was en route from amsterdam on its way to pacer ren and the attack took place in belgian territory. the train brought to a halt and routed to a station here in northern france. spencer stone, who was the first of those three americans to rush towards the gunman and bring him down was injured. right now, we are told by a nurse in the hospital here he is undergoing surgery for an injury sustained to his hand. this is a specialist hand clinic that medical work going on right now, we are told. >> nic robertson is getting us the latest there from lille, trans. for more on th

nic robertson joins me live in france. what do we know about this man? we know his name. do we know his motivation, who he was with, what drove this? >> reporter: counter terrorism officials across europe from spain through france to belgium all have reasons to believe that he is connected with radical islamists. as recently as may this year he went to turkey, he is believed to be connected with a french isis group in turkey before coming back to europe in july this year. two months in turkey. question is, did he get into isis, to join isis in syria. that's not clear. the concern is the same french isis group that he met with in turkey is the same group that directed an algerian living in france to attack a church in april this year. that attack was thwarted but not before he killed somebody else. so this group has a track record and they seem to have directed this man to attack from the train. that is sort of one of the starting places for the investigation here at the moment into this man. so a man with a lot of weapons on the train taken down by some heroic men. we hav

nic robertson is following the developments for us. >> reporter: the man in the yellow t-shirt does appearnt for the police. they are saying they don't know whether he's thai for a foreign national. there's been no claim of responsibility. as far as we know at this moment the motives of this man are in question. was this an attack by muslim separatists from the south of the country? that seems unlikely. experts in thailand say because this doesn't mirror the pattern of attacks they've had before. those attacks have been mostly in the south. there has been political violence in the capital over the last few years in particular, a couple small explosions earlier this year, but that political violence nothing to the scale of the blast at the temple site. why? we say not on this scale because so many people were injured and witnesses at the scene say that the bombs themselves were designed to cause maximum injuries. now, there is a potential here with this second blast today on a pier by the river that didn't injure anyone. the blast itself captured on video, but there is a possibility here fo
