alex savidge is in oakland with more on this investigation. alex. >> reporter: pam, good morning to you. this happened in oakland but for some reason the contra costa county district attorneys office is under investigation. this happening happened across the street or close to the oakland airport hilton. this morning you take a look there, you can see a couple policeouts that are here. let me show you the scene. it was just about 10:30 last night. a major response from oakland police after one person was shot either on the hotel property or just in front of the hotel. now that shooting victim was taken to highland hospital and we don't have an update on their condition. it is unclear who may have fired the shots out here but we have put in calls to oakland police. they referred us to the sheriffs office. and we just heard back a short time ago from a lieutenant with the contra costa sheriffs office. so obviously we have put in calls to district attorney's office. we are working to get more information on exactly what took place out here. again

we're in front of the starbucks store in oakland city center downtown. some of the city has been boarded up after the protests last night. vandals were here, they smashed out several of the windows at this store which is near the intersection of 14th street and clay. we're told a small group broke away from the main protest last night and came to vandalize some businesses including this one. there were also some demonstrators, there were reports of flags being burned during the protest last night, both american flags and confederate flags. and some demonstrators blocked off freeway off ramps of 980 and 880 in downtown oakland, they were using crime scene tape to block cars that were trying to get off the freeway. that led to a heated confrontation. >> they're at the airport waiting for us. developing news in oakland. that's where a police officer was shot and injured and a suspect was killed early in morning. >> oakland police chief sean whent is getting ready to hold a news conference for us. we'll bring it to you live. we're gonna get more details. here's what bealready know -- the shoot happened on martin luther king, junior boulevard in oakland. police say a man with a rifle shot an oakland police officer. that's when police say two officers fired back shooting that suspect. the police officer in the hospital listed in stable condition. police say the man who shot the police officer was wanted for questioning in a sexual assault investigation. now, again we're waiting for sean whent to hold a news conference to give us all of the details. we'll bring it to you live as soon as begins to speak. >>> we're following new developments in the search for a special olympics athletes. the man disappeared in los angeles saturday night. at 2:00 a.m., he walked into the hayward police station. brian flores

we are in oakland. laura? >> police have had the body cameras since 2010 but the first time they have shown the video to the reporters here this morning. they showed the video from two recent incidents one that got the most attention was the shooting of wilkes on wednesday at 27th and martin luther king jr. he was stopped by oakland police driving a car police say was wanted in an armed robbery in july. he took off. there was an attempt at a carjacking according to the police. and then at 27th and broadway there was a problem and you can see the police chasing wilkes and they are on the sidewalk and he appears to be carrying a gun in the left hand. he turns around and runs back to the police. that is when the shots rang out. here is the police chief on why his department released the video. >> we believe that doing it in the manner we have done it will allow us to correct some of the misinformation that is out there and at the same time preserve the integrity of our investigation. >> now, the chief went open t

the oakland police. we talked to people who live near that scene of the police shooting who say they're angry that another young man has been killed. they're demanding open and thorough investigation of the shooting. some of the residents say they fear the people who were sworn to protect and serve the public. >> we scared more of the law than we are the people out here on the streets. and that's sad. oakland's police chief describes police department as relatively progressive. wants to be as transparent as possible and there will be a thorough investigation of that shooting. >> we are trying to be responsible to what's going on, what the national conversation is about policing. the police department here has taken steps over the last couple years to reduce the number of officer involved shootings. >> they range from one to seven years of shooting. it was captured by police body cameras, but no word on when or if that video will be released. >>> fast moving jerusalem fire now in napa county, threatened 5
