would be better in segregated housing the no housing at all. in retrospect, we can question their judgment about that. in any event, they campaigned against the integration amendment. it was defeated with liberal votes. once that amendment was defeated, the public housing program that passed and we saw a massive expansion of public housing throughout the country. robert holmes in chicago and the homes in st. louis, which were oflt under the provisions this 1949 segregated public housing act. you may remember them. they became an iconic symbol of segregated public housing in this country. they were originally built as two separate projects -- the prudent project was for black. the iowa project was for whites. this went on throughout the country as late as 1984. a newspaper investigation by of "the dallas morning news" surveyed 47 metropolitan areas across the country and found that everyone of those metropolitan areas that public housing will segregated by race. and everyone one of those projects, the facilities, the amenities, the service, the

members of the house. time ago, i spoke with republican congressman reid ribble of wisconsin. representative ribble, welcome to the "newshour". you were part of a small group of conservative house members who met with speaker boehner yesterday. was his resignation a result of that meeting? >> oh, not at all. in fact, that whole idea didn't even come up in the meeting. all of us were quite surprised this morning, even kevin mccarthy mentioned he was told only moments before. so it caught us all offguard. the resignation or the speaker's position wasn't part of our discussion with the speaker yesterday. >> reporter: do you think this is a good thing for the how wase of representatives? >> there is been a good bit of talk about maintaining the status quo. i think the speaker was doing a good job managing the diverse opinions. there is 247 republicans and they span the political breadth of republicanism in this country and it's difficult to get them to all agree on a particular tact or strategy. so i felt pret

we have moved over from the white house as office to the white house as home.t has been that ever since it opened. it is one of its inherent jobs to provide the president and their family with a place to live what -- while the president is in office. here we have a radio, a pretty standard 1941 tabletop radio made by the emerson company. it was one of a dozen or so that was purchased for the private quarters of the white house. they were not the first radios to exist in the white house, but it is the earliest one to have survived. radios would be replaced and once the new ones arrived, the old ones were generally discarded as being old. this one shows in a picture, we picked things that had great documentation. there is a photograph of one of the third floor bedrooms one of the radios located between two single beds where either guest could reach over and turn on the radio in an era before television. this was acquired in 1941, just before the start of world war ii. the white house has also had other means of recreation. president coolidge was shown in a photog

hoover has had an african-american to the white house. the entire summer, she had censure and threats. there was also a threat on the part of southern members of congress to censure mrs. hoover in the congress. it becomes quite a brouhaha throughout the summer. susan: in the early parts of the 20th century, it is a precarious time for african-americans. how did this affect their fate and future over the next few years? emily: it was a difficult situation because traditionally the republican party is the party of abraham lincoln, civil rights, the party that african-americans vote for. herbert hoover in 1928 had actually broken into what until that point harding had made slight inroads into it, but hoover 15 state in what had been solidly democratic state in 1928. on the one hand, he was trying to balance expectations of -- we are the party of lincoln and we have a heritage of civil rights with starting to see potentially some inroads that we could be making into the south which is solidly democratic territory. herbert and lou have to nego
