fox news religion contributor jonathan morris joins us now. so good to see you, father jonathan. i want to talk about this first. as we just said, the pope touched on a potpourri of political issues including pro-life and encouraging congressional leaders to come together and do the work of the people, climate change. talk to me about how you think this will impact the dialogue on these issues as well as the direction these issues will take in the future. >> i think the message that pope francis left mostly with his actions, mostly with his actions, the way in which he treated people was do what you already know you should do. get back to basics. love people. lead with mercy, compassion. start with forgiveness. start with where we all are as a human community. then let's build up. then he went after those tough, more political issues. sexual abuse. he just today met with survivors or victims of clerical sexual abuse. or it was just announced today in philadelphia where there was a tremendous amount of not only abuse but cover-up at different levels. >> the pope as you know, fathe

father jonathan morris leads our reaction period here., there was a moment toward the end about 80% through this speech where he went off script and it was quite obvious. he talked repeatedly about globalization. it got the greatest applause line, but frankly a little difficult for us to pick up the interpretation. what did he say particularly about that and why did he become so animated and expresssive at that moment. >> he said four exceptional things in this speech. three were completely off the cuff and i'll get into those in a minute. the one that you ask about was about globalization. there is a lot of talk on the internet that this pope, because he's very liberal, that he's a lefty, even though he said that he wasn't on the plane from cuba here, was into some sort of one global community, that was dictated by international authorities like the united nations. what he said was that globalization can be a good thing or bad thing. it's a bad thing when a globalization means making everybody the same. and he used the example of a spher

. >> father jonathan morris earlier on the coverage was talking about the encountering of things where you can come together. we saw the president doing that this morning and the pope. they were not talking around each other but togging to the middle. >> i cannot remember the last time i turned up the volume to listen to a politician or anyone you see on television and yet i am not even catholic. i stopped what i was doing, getting ready for the show and truly listened to what he was saying and not because i was going to talk about it about because i was truly fascinated by what he was saying and i don't think you have someone respond that way to someone too often. you listen to his speech and he had something for everybody. talked about religious freedom, talked about being the son of immigrants and how this country welcomes immigrants, and climate change. i think that is what makes this pope unique is he has the moral authority to have both sides listen to what he says carefully. >> this isn't the first meeting for president obama and pope francis. they met last march, 2014, when pre

the really, really good travel narratives by people like jonathan raven, jan morris, these are people who write travel narratives really, really well. and what makes a really good travel narrative is mistakes and surprises and misconceptions that get rearranged along the way. good travel narratives aren't really about getting from point a to point b, it's about trying to get from point a to point b and winding up somewhere else entirely, or maybe getting to point b in the end and realizing it's not at all what you thought it was going to be. and so when i think of what a good science nonfiction in the medical vein looks like, it's kind of like travel writing in a way. so that's what i'll try to share with you. it's the ways that researching this book, talking to a lot of patients, researchers, reviewing a lot of studies, talking to a lot of physicians, visiting clinics, trying medical marijuana for myself, what that's taught me not only in terms of the science, but really in terms of surprises and ways in which i've been surprised and, frankly, the ways in which i've been wrong. so th
