cbs 2's dave carlin live in mineola. dave. >> reporter: maurice, a wednesday of disreputations, one-third of lirr trains not running right now but at least the ones that are, are getting straight through. that wasn't the case earlier. >> it's ridiculous. we pay a lot of money for a ticket. >> reporter: this week hassles for the riders of the long island rail road most commuters had destinations many miles away down the line. but here in mineola they had to stop, then hop on to shuttle buses. >> just trying to get to ronkonkoma. >> reporter: his day started in san diego. a flight home from california followed by the lirr train from penn which he was on before he learned about the main line shutdown in both directions between mineola and hicksville and that, surprise -- he would also be taking a bus. >> a boat ride and a walk and i'd be all right. can't get on the train. >> reporter: the overcrowded trains, platforms and buses were because of this. chopper 2 over tracks west of huckabee where two trains of 16 on a freight

all eastbound service on the main line stores in mineola. trains from port jefferson, ronkonkoma points east terminate in hicksville. though are the westbound lanes terminate in hicksville. there is bus service that is moving commuters between those two stations. they put that plan into place at 10:30. it will be in place all afternoon. the reason is that they want the rail workers to be able to work without having to worry about trains rolling through the derailment zone. officials admit it's a big job. >> if we can't get there, we have to turn around and start over somewhere else. >> the track guys have been out there for many hours. i was told it was in excess of 1,000 feet of track damaged, significantly damaged, third rail, regular rail, ties, all of that. >> reporter: back to a live picture. 1,000 feet of track. that has to be repaired. i'm told that two switches have to be replaced. all of that, the railroad is hoping to have done by 4:00, 5:00 tonight roughly. if that is not done, i'm told they will revert to the plan that they had i

commuters today, the end of the line was mineola. the trip home from manhattan meant transferring to buses for a half hour ride to hicksville, then waiting on the platform there for another train east. other riders headed in reverse. commuters like eric kagan were furious. >> i took a train to hicksville and it was really late. then had to spend 25 minutes on a bus or so. now i will be late for meetings so i'm trying to figure out what to do next. >> reporter: overnight rail workers removed the derailed freight care and spent the next 16 hours struggling repair the damage. it would not come soon enough to save the evening rush hour. >> our track guys have been at it for many hours and they got a good look at the damage. i was told it was in excess of a thousand feet of track damaged, significantly damaged, third rail, regular rail, ties, all of that. >> reporter: with one of the two tracks out of service, the railroad canceled westbound service on the ronkonkoma and port jeff branches at 3:00 p.m. to make way for eastbound trains. th
