and as meg terrell reports, blood pressure is big business for the drug industry. >> the findings are potentially life saving. in preliminary results in a study published today, lowering blood pressure lower than guidelines currently recommend reduced cardiac events. normal blood pressure is 120 over 80. the top number is systolic. they found lowering that number to 120, rather than 140, reduced cardiac death and stroke by a third. it could have a big impact on the one in three americans that have high blood pressure, which is a leading factor for heart failure, stroke, and kidney disease, but some experts say the results are preliminary and need to be confirmed when the study is completed. blood pressure medications brought in $12 billion in revenue in 2014 in the u.s. according to i.m.s. health. and drugmakers like pfizer have all worked in the space, the most popular medicines are now generic. it makes for more investment in developing drugs. >> i'm sure data like this will encourage that sort of thing. not unlike what we saw in some of the antiinfections and antiviral. >> the init

meg terrell joins us now, she's been following that proposal. meg, is mrs.linton's plan as worrisome for the biotech industry as investors yesterday feared? >> hey, sue, well, there are parts of it that are worrisome to the community. what some folks are saying the reaction we've been seeing in the stocks are more just a reflection of the jitteriness of a market prizing for five years and the signs that anything could come to potentially stop it. what clinton really focused on today and what we heard from her was trying to get companies to direct their focus from marketing over into research. but the main thing that the drug industry and that investors are afraid of is she's going to give medicare the ability to negotiate drug prices and did lay that out in her plan today. >> what would it change and how would it affect specific companies and their stocks? >> so if medicare were enabled to negotiate drug prices analysts say this could change everything. decades of the way the drug industry is built. right now, private insurers are the only ones doing the neg
