a lot of my favorite writers who have been able to do that successful, lonesome dub which i considere of the best books i've ever read. then he picked up and took those characters, he went back in time and i have loved all of those books. i have loved them all. to kill a mockingbird just has so much of our heart, our southern heart attached. i know all that has been written and said about it. that probably has something to do with why have not already devoured it yet. the truth is, i don't think you can take a saint like atticus and satisfy anybody. when i first heard about it i was thrilled because we all want to believe that there is a lost manuscript somewhere. you know what i mean. we all want to believe that deep in the desk drawer, every old newspaper guy that i ever worked with including me, had the beginnings of a novel in their desk drawer, tucked away. we love the idea of a lost manuscript. the notion that this was a version of a book sent to a publisher and then rejected, and then rewritten to focus on a particular part of it. that is the thing that i think people lucite u
