janelle burrell has more from brownsville. >> reporter: it first appeared to be a simple open and closed case until it was re-opened when the medical examiner discovery was found to be incorrect. now police are trying to figure police thought the 82-year-old had died naturally in her sixth floor apartment here in brownsville last month. her body discovered by a home health aide, alone on her kitchen floor. it was a closed case for investigators. a doctor signing off on the death certificate that she died of complications from diabetes. but employees of a funeral home begin preparing her body and found stab wounds. the medical hammer now declaring it a homicide, saying the cause of death is stab wounds with blunt impact injuries of the head and torso. >> they find out they kill her. say what? >> reporter: neighbors stunned to hear that someone would have wanted to harm the elderly woman. the apartment now sealed by police and padlocked as they >> she don't beinger nobody. she was a good laid -- she don't bother nobody. she was a good lady. >> reporter: reporting live from brooklyn, janell

janelle burrell reports from brownsville. >> i can't believe it. you know, everybody saying shocked. i've been here 25 years, and this is disgusting. >> reporter: heart ache now turned to anger and disbelief for her neighbors. >> i don't want to talk about that. >> reporter: it's that painful? >> very. >> reporter: the question here many have, why did the 82-year- old's doctors rule the cause of death as complications from hyperincidents diabetes and why did it take employees at the funeral home preparing her body for burial to discover stab wounds and bruising on the body a month after she died to get police to reopen the case as a homicide? stab wounds to the neck and upper body and severe bruising as the new cause of death. >> a family doctor as far as we can tell right now never viewed the body. the body stayed for about a month in the brooklyn morgue at which time the body was then removed by the funeral director to the funeral home where the director discovered a stab wound in the neck. >> police have sealed and padlocked the door to the apar
