we're talking asian pears this noon. here's tony with some shopping tips. >> reporter: well, today's tip of the day is going to be is going to be with asian pears. they come into the market now, they are lovely. they are beautiful. and they are shipped in this beautiful cushion like tray right here and netting because they bruise so easily. so look at this. it's almost like jicama texture with the flavor of pear. it's that crunchy. when you buy them the more yellow the better. a slight green is okay. you want to make sure the skin right here is free from any shriveling whatsoever and heavy for their size and they have to be firm. now, they are called asian pears but they are closer to apples when you store them. you must store them in the refrigerator. at room temperature, they will become mealy and they will age up on you and not taste good. so put them in the refrigerator, sliced up in salads or out of hand. they are delicious. i even like them with a little bit of citrus juice, orange on lime, to make it taste better.
