todd magel reports. todd: after more than a century, the city's crown jewel on the des moines river is ready for an update. and that means for the first time since the floods of 1993, it's shutting down until sometime in 2018. >> i think this is a very big deal. todd:. deputy city manager carl metzger says the thousands of people who pay parking tickets and conduct other government business here will have to head to the city's away at 400 east court. city leaders just approved a nearly million dollar budget to move. workers won't be able to stay in renovations. >> the logistics of that, as you monumental. todd: among the many changes -- heat boiler deep in the buildings basement. crews will also install a new heating and air conditioning system and a new sprinkler updates. >> even though the remodeling will take about two years, the idea is to make sure city hall doesn't look that much different and the historic building will last another 100 years. >> so a lot of things that we do are going to be behind the scenes, above the ceiling that the users won't actually see. todd: they will see more improvements just outside city hall. during the shut down, the parking lot just east of the building will close and work will begin on a new parking project.
