coming up, a familiar face in new york city politics -- christine quinn. she was the city council speaker and a candidate for mayor against bill de blasio. now, as it happens, she's in charge of a huge organization that helps homeless women and children, and she's working with the mayor and his folk. >> welcome back to "upclose." she wanted to be the first woman to become mayor of new york, and for a while, she was the front-runner, the candidate to beat, until bill de blasio grabbed that mantle from her. christine quinn is here. her new job -- head of one of new york's largest and most respected homeless-service agencies for women and children, called win. christine, nice to see you. >> thank you. >> so, your new job -- what's it like? >> seven weeks in, and it's amazing. you know, we at win are the largest provider of shelter and permanent housing to homeless families in new york. we house 4,700 people a night, 2,700 of whom are children. and the staff at win -- they're on the front lines every day, trying to help these families children. >> and when you

[laughter] that cannot guarantee everyone will live three years longer, but i can guarantee on average they will. and so it shows you can do some things. what have we done? we put grades on restaurants. the number of deaths from salmonella fell overnight. we put smoke detectors in apartments come and the number of fire deaths collapsed. we put in strong measures to stop kids from carrying guns, and our murder rate went down dramatically. in fact, and new york city, it is still hard to get murdered. >> do you think information is key? mike: in the end, the public is a lot smarter than they are given credit for by the press and the government. in the end, john, i have always believed that we have incarcerated all of the irrational people. so when somebody does something that does not make any sense, it isn't that they are irrational. you just do not know what they are trying to do. the public cares about themselves, and maybe their kids and grandkids. and they would do whatever is in th

laura ingle live in new york with the response in the big city. we start with trace gallagher in los angeles. what more do we know, trace, about the specifics of the threat? >> reporter: we do know, shep, we believe both new york and los angeles did get the very same e-mail. there might have been some minor changes but for all intents and purposes we believe it was the exact same. superintendent ramone cortines says the l.a. unified school district gets many threats a year but this was particularly credible. it talked about backpacks, packages and explosives and mentioned not one but several schools. he was very concerned because of the recent san bernardino attacks although very early on authorities knew there was no connection to san bernardino. those who have read the e-mails say the threat was made by a self-described muslim extremist who misspelled allah, used a pornographic reference and made highly unrealistic claims. though law enforcement strongly disagreed with closing the schools, during the news conference there was a unified front. lis
