in central park is where adam reese is at. am, we're waiting any minute now we expect the mayor of new york city to come to the microphones. we'll dip into him when he does tell us what's the latest. but you're there in central park where we saw a measure and this is much earlier of some 15 inches of snow so far. what are you seeing this hour? >> reporter: that's right, richard. and the mayor will tell you how serious this all is. it continues to come down just as hard as it was this morning when we were here at 6:00 a.m. you see this driving, blinding snow. 15 inches so far by tomorrow afternoon when this blizzard warning is over we'll see at least two feet. as you mentioned earlier that travel ban here in new york city beginning at 2:30 is in place. no cars on the road unless they are emergency vehicles like the one that is stuck behind me. this ambulance was on its way to a woman across on the other side of the park who had slid into a tree on a sled. so they are trying to dig out here. they'll make their way over to her. as

adam reese has been reporting for us and he's in times square. what are we hearing about that, adam? >> well, it looks like the bridges and tunnels are okay. times square looks to be okay and that can be deceiving because it's the outer boroughs and places like brooklyn and queens and westchester and parts of new jersey and connect cut that are hard to get to in terms of plowing and those areas will be the focus tonight and into tomorrow and make sure that everybody can get to work. we mentioned it earlier, 26.8 inches here in central park yesterday and that was a tenth of an inch from the 30.5 inches at kennedy airport. so a lot of snow that needs to be cleaned up. last night for many people it was a special evening and they had an opportunity to get outside and walk the new york city streets. most people stayed indoors, but not susan, she's from northern california and you're visiting in town and you're doing some college touring, but it was an opportunity to see new york like most people have never seen it. what was it like? >> it was pretty co

adam reese has been reporting all day for us. adam, the headline coming out of new york city might be, they're getting upwards of almost double what they may have thought would have happened today. >> reporter: yeah, richard. it's continuing to snow. we're coming up on 20 hours of continuous snow, about 1 to 3 inches every hour. right now, we're almost at 20 inches. when all is said and done by tomorrow afternoon, when the blizzard warning is over, we could be up to 30 inches. and all of that snow has essentially shut this city down. the travel ban began at 2:30 this afternoon, no cars on the city streets, sort of a surreal scene, buses and trains shut down. laguardia and kennedy airport, also shut down for the day. hopefully they'll begin getting back on line tomorrow afternoon and that's when the big clean-up will begin. richard? >> the mayor has said, stay off the streets, otherwise police will arrest you? >> reporter: that's correct. >> all right, adam reese, thanks so much for the very latest there in central park. again, the

msnbc adam reese was at central park yesterday. and adam how does it took today as people start to get going. 7:00 a.m. was when the travel ban was lifted. it immediately turned from zero to one. did people immediately get back on to the street? >> reporter: yeah. we're slowly seeing the city come back to life. right now we saw the cars come out first then trains and you about slowly but for the airport not so much. jfk and laguardia will be very slow to be able to get back on their feet, equipment coming back here into new york city. it will certainly take some time. hundred of delays and cancelations at the airports here in the new york area. snow totals again i know bill mentioned it a little while ago. i have to reiterate, 26.8 inches in central park, .1 away from the record. last night it was a virtual ghost town here in new york city. many people taking advantage of this once in a lifetime experience, walking around the city streets. other people stayed inside heeded the warning. i got a group here from israel. you all wanted

joining us now from central park, adam reese. when we were talking an hour ago, we saw an emergency vehicle just over your shoulder, trying to help an individual, but got stuck itself, and needed another emergency vehicle to come and get it. >> he was able to get out, richard, with the help of another tow truck. another ambulance was able to get to that injured person in central park. as you can see, the snow continues to come down at the pace it's been coming down all day. very consistent, about 1 to 3 inches per hour. up to a little over 19 inches in central park, and that's the best place to get measurements here in new york city. by tomorrow afternoon when this is all said and done, with the blizzard warning, we could be upwards of 30 inches. all that snow has brought this city to a virtual stand still in terms of transportation. 2:30 this afternoon, all cars off the road. buses and trains at a virtual stand still. the two airports, kennedy and laguardia, shut down all day. that's brought people out to the parks, especially h

msnbc's adam reese is in central park right now. good morning to you. is anyone but you out in this mess? >> reporter: well, actually, alex, there are a couple of dog walkers if you can believe it. there are joggers out here. heavy, blinding snow. blizzard like conditions out here in central park. it is coming down at about an inch to two inches an hour. when all is said and done as you heard bill say, it could be between a foot to two feet. maybe all the way up to three feet. now, the mayor declaring a winter weather emergency here in new york today. that means they're on high alert. all agencies are active today. stay off the roads, when i looked out the window, i said, boy, in would be a good day to stay in bed. they have 6,000 miles of streets they need to plow. they have 2,400 salt spreaders and plows and they have the whole city covered. now, a big focus is flooding. governor christie as you heard, back in new jersey. governor cuomo here in new york is more concerned about flooding than this snow. he'll keep an eye on places like long island. broo
