schneider administration, which created this disaster responded by saying got your letter. thanks for writing, but we really don't think you have the right to tell us what to do. governor rick schneider's administration was legally obligated to respond within one day of receiving this order. they did, but the response from his administration to this very specific, very detailed federal order reads we question whether the epa has the lead authority to order a state and its agencies to take the actions outlined in this order. the schneider administration caused this disaster, they know they did. they admit they did. now as if the city of flint isn't dealing with enough, thanks to them. they are telling them to back off and stop telling them what to do. leave it to them to sort it out. that response from the state came on friday night. the federal government has responded back. the feds have written back a one page, one paragraph letter saying not only do they have the legal authority but michigan better step on it. the state must immediately commence and continue work to meet the obligations as ordered. the epa says state officials must comply and expect, quote, full imp

because tonight, in addition to all that, governor schneider and state health officials have now hado report something new. a deadly spike in something called legionnaires' disease in flint. which has also happened there since the city switched its water source. this legionnaires' outbreak has resulted in the deaths of ten people -- ten people dead in two separate outbreaks of legionnaires' disease since the city started drinking from the flint river. now, we do get outbreaks sometimes of legionnaires' disease in this country. last year, there were outbreaks in the state of illinois and new york. legionnaires' disease happens. it's caused by a bacteria, basically gives you pneumonia. pneumonia, which can kill you. the bacteria that causes it is commonly found in water. health officials in michigan say they do not yet know whether this, again, fatal outbreak is directly related to the change in flint's drinking water, but they are considering that possibility, and you can see why. flint switched to drinking local river water in april 2014. it was two months later in june that the firs

governor rick schneider said he's requesting the federal government provide medical care for young peoplen flint. he's going to ask the public health service to cover long term health care for people in flint under the age of 21. he says he want a flint specific expansion of medicaid. that federal health insurance program will cover every young person in flint regardless of income. he's asking for comprehensive medical treatment for the long haul for all flint kids because they all drank that lead poisoned water because of what his administration did. that's the request coming from the state of michigan. we have not heard back from the public health service on this request. this is new. what he is asking for from the federal government, long term help, medical help for people who live in flint and especially long term help for flint's kids. joining us now is the mayor of flint, michigan. i'm told major karen weaver is on the phone because she just got out of a long meeting with the governor on this subject. thank you so much for being with us. thanks for joining us. >> thank you. i apolog

parents reacted to 74 pages of documents about the crisis, voluntarily released by michigan governor rick schneider. the documents lay out a timeline of warnings that were dis missed. the state agency that ensures clean drinking water spent months denying the lead october. in an e-mail, the believe now we made a mistake. corrosion control should have been required from the beginning. corrosion control treats the water, preventing lead from leeching into the system. six months before on april 25th, epa manager wrote, "flint has essentially not been using any corrosion control treatment." june 24th, sounds the alarm again. sample results indicate the presence of high lead." no action was taken as state water officials continued to insist the water was safe. even after multiple independent studies proved otherwise many in december, a letter from the task force set up by the governor described the response as aggressive dis missal, belittlement and attempts to dis credit these efforts with a persistent tone of scorn and derision. the head of that agency and his spokesperson resigned. the documents rele
