[applause] >> good morning everyone. for the second time, i would like to thank hofstra for including the unique perspectives of some of our country's national treasures for political cartoonists who have drawn president george w. bush among other presidents and cultural icons throughout their distinguished careers. to my immediate left, is steve breen. he was born in los angeles and grew up in neighboring orange county, the second oldest of eight children. he attended the university of california at riverside where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science and it was at the university that he started drawing editorial cartoons for his school newspaper, the highlander. in 1991, he won the scholz award as a top college cartoonist. all of you budding editorial cartoonists out there, it starts in high school and college. he was about to become a high school teacher when he was offered a job in 1994. he became a full blown editorial cartoonist there in 1996. in april of 1998, he
