lori rothman has details to why. lori. >> bottom line earnings per share in the fourth quarter 10 cents versus two cent estimate. 10 cents a share what they did last year. revenue a little soft. you can see the shares are popping in the extended session. you've seen them as high as 12%. this is because of extraordinary subscriber growth all around the world. we know netflix has a presence all around the world except in china. netflix shares are higher ahead of the report. they continue to surge because of fantastic subscriber growth. i'm trying to nail down numbers. for fourth quarter, international subscriber growth came in four million subscribers. they were only expected to add 3 1/2 million. overall we want netflix coming in with 75 million total current subscribers globally. we have to do a little math to see if we're at that number. so far wall street is very impressed with this report. shares are incredibly volatile. as you know they move on average 12 or 13% the day after last earnings. this year has been a t

let's go to lori rothman on the floor of the new york stock exchange.hat are the traders saying about why we're making the comeback? >> what a difference a trading day makes. sentiment is reversed. a couple of things are at play. oil settled at 2:30 eastern time, down about 4% on the day, that's kind of out of the picture for now, giving folks relief. we saw the dow off 566 points with the vix spiking above 3132, levels today, i think a lot of traders stepped back and said enough is enough, we've tested the scary august 25th lows, there is something in dow theory that says when the dow jones industrial average falls in tandem with the leading indicator of the transports, happened last summer, that is a significant signal to buy. that level on the dow was 15666. we came close but zoomed off of that level. technical levels at play, sarge has been on the air talking about the s&p levels, and saw the nasdaq turn positive, the russell, smaller cap stocks, less exposure to china. there is optimism that the smaller cap stocks that aren't as vulnerable to the b

lori rothman down on floor of the new york stock exchange. lori, talk me through what happened. >> my goodness what a day and roller coaster ride. we end lower across the board. lower exposure to economies about china and other larger countries as you know have been slowing. china data has been killing the markets really for the last number of months but really digging in these last couple of trading sessions and that's one of the catalysts behind the precipitous decline in oil prices. oil companies were weak. enough is enough. we tested late summer lows. you know the economy, jobs picture, certain sections of the economy are okay. charlie gasparino talking about cheaper oil prices leads to more consumer spending. perhaps this will lead to boost for the u.s. economy and maybe we tested low es. i say, maybe, maybe very strong bill case there. there are still significant pressures there. looking at futures rates predicting next interest rate hike, shows chances are we only likely see to the fed fund futures one rate hike this year, versus three

lori rothman has details . stocks were slammed today after the price of crude oil fell to a 7 year cents a barrel. that's a decline of 5.6% this after word that north korea successfully, they say, tested a hydrogen bomb followed by data released earlier in the week that showed the chinese economy slowing even further, so when all was said and done, stocks on wall street fell about 1 and a half percent with volatility popping higher. so, here are the numbers. the dow jones industrial average down 252 closing below 17 thousand, 16,909, and that wasn't even the worst level on the day. the s and p 500 fell 26 points to close at 19-90 and the nasdaq composite index lost 56 points to close at a level of 48-36. so, that big decline in oil prices weighed on the energy sector. energy stocks were the worst performers on the day. as a group they were down 4%, but on a bright note, walmart, the only stock on the dow that closed out the session with gains. and then you had shares of netflix which also had a nice stay today.

lori rothman has numbers for us from the new york stock exchange. we begin, lori. reporter: hi, there, david. better than expected report from alcoa. in perspective significant klein from same -- decline from same period a year ago. 4 cents versus the 2-cent estimate. that is okay. revenue slightly soft, 5.25 billion versus expectation of 5.29 billion. shares in the extended session are slightly higher, up about 2%. this is because alcoa has a good strategy to deal with declining raw aluminum costs. as you now raw aluminum fell 25% in the last year. last year alcoa ink ad deal with ge for 1 1/2 billion dollars for long-term supply for ge aviation unit. as part of earnings call, alcoa expects this year's global aerospace sales to increase by eight or 9% that is the story with ge. revenue down 17% from this time last quarter but they're working, as we know the global growth slowdown is big theme of everything lately. they're doing something to try to upset it. that is where we are with alcoa. david: very low and beat expectations. that is why they're up a little bit.

david: meanwhile all 30 dow components are -- let's go to lori rothman at the new york stock exchange. a sea of green. >> you said it, dave. great to see you guys. all right. so we've got a second day of a stock market rally. though, it's still going to worst down as the worst month for stocks since just last august. looking a lot worse, though, a couple of days ago as you know. mention the closing numbers, came by about 50 minutes before the close and said 90% of the orders are to buy stocks. so tremendous amount of optimism, all triggered first thing this morning when japan cut a couple of interest rates. so that got a lot of folks thinking. hey, central bank easing may be the seem around the world, including our federal reserve charlie gasparino talking a lot about this today. not likely to raise rates four times this year. so obviously central bank easing sells great bullishness for u.s. substantiating. we also have the gdp print come out. disappointing but not a surprise. everybody knew it was weak. so seven tenths of a percent in the fourth quarter. a couple of notable losers. a
