i want to bring in cnn chief medical correspondent sanjay gupta. dr. gupta, we've heard about the health effects to pregnant women and their babies, horrible. very basic question here, is the zika virus a significant danger to people who are not pregnant? >> it doesn't appear to be, jim. in fact most people, 75% to 80% of people will likely have either no symptoms or very few sto symptoms. there have been a few cases of guillon-barre but for the vast majority of people it doesn't appear to make them that sick. it's really the women who were pregnant. >> you have 31 cases in the u.s., principally people we're told who came here after travel to other countries, including in south america. how quickly could this develop into an outbreak here in the u.s.. as i understand it. one mosquito bites a carrier and that mosquito carries it to someone else. how quickly could this spread? >> all the cases, first of all, 31 cases were from other countries and people came back here so there's been no transmission within the united states as of yet. it could happen wher

sanjay gupta has more. >> reporter: so this is the blood sucker everyone's after. the female 80s egypti mosquito. she's the main carrier of several dangerous virus that's have spread around the world, including yellow fever, dengue, chickengunya and now zika. it's spreading in many top vacation spots such as the caribbean, mexico, and brazil, which is also the site of this summer's olympic games. unlike other mosquito-borne diseases zika has become of particular concern to pregnant women because brazil is now the epicenter of a zika epidemic linked to babies born with microcephaly. it's a devastating neurological condition where the baby's head and brain don't develop. brazilian health officials say nearly 4,200 babies have been born with this condition since october. that's compared to 146 in all of 2014. 51 of those babies have died. women living in brazil, el salvador, colombia, and jamaica are now being told not to get pregnant at this time. and in the united states the cdc is also sounding the alarm. >> pregnant women should consider deferring travel to areas

sanjay gupta joins us with more.osure of lead, what level does it become dangerous? is it harmful in the small eest amounts? >> it is. there is no safe amount of lead. that's something people have been saying for quite sometime. it's an interesting history, as often happens in public health and medicine at one point they said it an exceptional level and five was an acceptable level and studies about 15 years ago basically concluded and no such thing and small amounts can cause problems with cells. that's the message. >> how do they know if their family is suffering? >> in the short term it can have fatigue and vague pains and abo abdominal pains but as you get further along, a more chronic problem in kids, you can have learning disabilities. you can have difficulties with school, relationships, all sorts of different things. ultimately the way you diagnose it is to find tpresence of lead in the blood. it's there and could be causing symptoms. >> is lead poisoning irreversible? >> for the point it is irreversib irreve

sanjay gupta who is in flint, michigan. uch lead is necessary to cause health dangers? and what are the effects -- how is this lead going to hurt the children of flint? >> reporter: yeah, well, you know, what you'll hear from doctors and public health officials, jake, you've probably heard this as a safe amount of lead. the reason they say that is because even small amounts depending on who the individual is can have some sort of health effect. let me give you some of the numbers to your question here. when it comes to lead in the water, for example, they say cause for concern is at five parts per billion. now, that's a very small amount. that's where they say cause for concern starts to come about. some of the testing come out of virginia tech was 158 parts per billion. there was a home that we visited yesterday, jake, where the water tested at 13,000 parts per billion. i mean, i've never seen anything like it. i have visited lead contaminated places around the world. this was the highest number i had seen. that just gives

cnn chief medical correspondent sanjay gupta is in flint. you've been there now for a little while.t you're seeing in terms of the health problems and now the health care being provided to people suffering. >> well, i'll tell you, john, didn't quite know what to expect. i think in the medical community, lead is considered a sort of "yesterday issue." something we had dealt with for some time in this country but haven't had to in a while. we put it in the accomplished list of things. something we all learned about in medical school but hadn't seen probably with our own eyes. people who have been affected by lead, who have been poisoned by lead, which is not an unfair word because when lead gets into the body, it essentially is irreversible. for a lot of people, they have sort of the more immediate symptoms. they just don't feel well. they lose appetite. they're very heallethargic. the concern, what we're hearing from a lot of citizens, the medical community, is that the long-term ramifications are significant as well. performance in school, ultimately intellectual development, overal

sanjay gupta is with me now with more. good morning. >> yeah. this is a stern sort of announcement from the w.h.o. different in some ways what we heard from them on ebola. there was criticism they weren't fast enough. this time using very frank language saying the level of alarm is extremely high. talking about the fact that it has spread pretty considerably and whether likely continue to spread. and also that there wasn't a lot done with zika virus for a long time. there wasn't incentive to build an antiviral or vaccine so it is going take some time do that. but really sort of encouraging scientists and laps around the country to start working on this or continue working on it so there are only answers here. >> when the world health organization says the virus is spreading explosively around the americas, that sounds really frightening sanjay. >> yeah. i think there was no question. it was mainly relegated to a small forest in uganda. the zika forest, where it got its name. and started spreading the last couple of years. and just this year we'v

sanjay gupta with more on this zika virus.rently contained to those travelers who were sick when they were away. came back to the states. and now it spread more. how far spread? >> well, keep in mind, what we're talking about, a virus that is still -- it's present in many cases around the world, 23 countries where we know that it's there. the people who have it in the united states that have come back have contracted it over there and then brought it back. so it hasn't necessarily spread within the united states. it's not spreading among mosquitoes in the united states. but that's the concern. that's what people have talked about with this now as well. >> who is most at risk? >> it's really people who are living in these areas, these 23 countries, where we know zika virus is present. what happens is a mosquito will bite somebody who has the infection and then go bite somebody else. keep in mine, it's not the mosquitoes themselves, it's m s mosquitoes acting as the vector. there are a lot of talks about women who are pregnant,
