chief meteorologist scott williams tracking how long this blast of winter is going to be around. scott? >> i mean iain and lucy hard to believe that yesterday's record high of 65 degrees has been replaced with temperatures this evening in the 30s. some of that cold air will stick around for quite sometime. also, we have a chance for some of the first flakes of the season. ultimate doppler right now it's dry it's quite so no snow if you're stepping outdoors this evening but look at all of the purple advisories off to the west. we have to look around the chicago land area and this is where our next clipper the disturbance that will be moving in tomorrow to provide some of that snow. it's a fast-mover not a whole lot of moisture either but temperatures are going to be critical because high temperatures tomorrow take a look at your planner for the philadelphia area, yeah, we'll go above freezing. 44 degrees will be the high temperature but by the afternoon and evening, those temperatures drop in that precipitation starts to move in. so we're talking afternoon and evening rush moving i

let's zen it over to chief meteorologist scott williams. >> exactly, lucy. a pretty quiet weather day and you hear a loud boom in the atmosphere. in particular parts of south jersey, between the time of 1:30 and 2:30, we were tracking the noises as well as those tremors basic until military aircraft is moving faster than the speed of sound. so we're talking over 700 miles per hour. it creates a shock wave. at the nose of the plane it then kind of under lays behind the plane and you hear that sound as it goes from the atmosphere. the al toy to you of the plane all the way to the ground. take look at some of the areas of the reports. pretty much the entire jersey shore we saw some reports and also in around the hammonton area u.s. gs confirmed they were reporting that sonic boom. so basically when you have that plane it tax off, the altitude impacts the sound, also, the size of the plane. so to the observer on the ground, it can be delayed as far as hearing that sound but the colder air is denser at the surface and also a little bit of an inversion that can la

let's get straight over to chief meteorologist scott williams. need we need to pull out those umbrellas. >> don't cancel your plans. have the umbrella and rain gear handy especially as we move toward the latter part of the evening and overnight. look at ultimate doppler. we're dry and quiet for now but take a look to the south. a lot of moisture some heavy rain to get through and, yes, worry tracking pretty much all rain with the system as it moves up from the nation's capitol and also the chesapeake bay area so over the next couple of hours, those clouds really start to thicken wine 8:00 o'clock, moving toward wilmington, dover, as well as wildwood but look at the temperatures, well above freezing by 10:00 o'clock it really starts to fill in and then after midnight, look at moderate to heavy rainfalling across the area in particular south and east of the i-95 corridor. so the main timing after about eight, 9:00 o'clock threw the overnight we're talking heaviest rain south and east and how much are we tracking a half an inch to an inch of rain. s

for more oh i'll send it oh to have my colleague scott william. od evening, scott. >> hi there, kathy a lot to talk about with this storm. we have blizzard watches posted for much of the area. so what does that mean? what do we need to have in order for the system to turn into that blizzard? as far as the conditions, we need to talk about those winds. it's not just the snow. we have to have sustained winds or gusts 35 miles per hour or greater as well as the visibility reduced from falling or blowing snow to a quarter of a mile or less and that has the last for at least three or more hours it looks like the ingredients will come together to produce that blizzard if in fact we have a blizzard warning it will be the first time since 2010 for philadelphia. take look at future wind gusts. you can see by friday night starting to pick up in intensity across the area. but look at this. as early as saturday morning, we're talking winds gusting 40, 50 miles per hour south and east of the i-95 corridor. and then look at 10:00 a.m. gusting near 60 miles per h

for more on the science of the shock waves, let me turn it over to scott williams who has the latest t. scott very interesting atmospheric case today. >> absolutely, kathy. social media was all a buzz about feeling those tremors and hearing that loud sonic boom. so let's talk about the science behind those shock waves. the physics, if you will. basically an object has to travel faster than the speed of sound. in this instance we believe it was that f35c. so large amplitude propagating waves formed behind the nose of that plane and also a shock wave cone is produced. then you hear that thunder like sonic boom and that's what everyone was talking about on social media. so why was it so far reaching? we temperature inversion in the atmosphere. so basically warmer air a loft, colder air at the surface kind of trapping and propagating those sun waves so it traveled horizontally fanning out across the area. also, you have to keep in mind the altitude of that flight. if it was a little lower, the sound would be heard farther as well. and also the magnitude and scope the size and the weight o
