i'm maria hinojosa. this is one on one. ta-nehisi coates, you're one of the senior editors for the atlantic monthly, you're a blogger, you live on twitter, you wrote this wonderful memoir called the beautiful struggle, about your relationship with your dad. it's great to have you on one on one. >> thank you. i'm honored to be here. >> hinojosa: so, put those two things together. i mean, did you say, "i'm going to be a writer," and then all of a sudden you realized that your life was on the internet or...? >> no, i wrote off-line, in print, for about 12 years almost exclusively, and it's so funny. colson whitehead has this recent piece about writers who complain that twitter and blogging is going to destroy their writing. and it's actually a split that i never really understood much. i love print, and i like blogging and i like tweeting. you know, i like a lot of things. and so it never really struck me as being in contrast or even being a problem or, you know, it being two different worlds or anything like that. it's just w

>> mejorana. >> hinojosa: mejorana. mejorana. >> yes. >> hinojosa: and it's a kind of blues? >> it's... i call it our panamanian blues. and it has roots, of course, spanish roots, as a lot of the music of latin america. this is a wonderful experiment, because it deals with folk material, connecting with folk material from the north. like you have folk music where the blues come from, and folk music from latin america, folk music from south america. so this is the idea of pan-american jazz, actually-- connecting the whole americas to one sound. >> hinojosa: so you've named this. you call it pan-american jazz? >> well, it's a movement, i think. it's a movement that started in the 20th century with a lot of people doing it. you know, i learned a lot from paquito, for example. he really... >> hinojosa: paquito d'rivera. >> yes, paquito d'rivera, great cuban saxophonist. he introduced me to a lot of music, playing venezuelan waltzes, playing old contradances. and the desire... a lot of the desire to combine folkloric material with traditional rhythms, with latin american song form

i'm maria hinojosa. this is one on one. mona eltahawy, it's great to have you on our program. >> thanks for having me, maria, it's a pleasure. >> hinojosa: so you know, i actually, when i was writing my description of you, i said, "hmm, i would actually call you an in-your-face moderate muslim feminist." and it's like, wait a second, how can you be an in-your-face moderate muslim? but that's what you are, really. >> if i had to identify with a label, i would use liberal or progressive, because i find moderate doesn't really mean anything and it ends up being used against the muslim community. so how about in-your-face liberal muslim feminist? >> hinojosa: in-your-face muslim liberal feminist, which is... the feminist part is, you get a lot of followers and you get a lot of attention around that. so for our audience, just, you know, describe what a muslim feminist is, because some people might say, "i don't understand that." >> well, you know, as a muslim and a feminist and an egyptian woman, i have a long history to draw on

i'm maria hinojosa. this is one on one. your majesty queen noor, what an honor to have you here. >> oh, i'm delighted. thank you. >> hinojosa: there's something quite beautiful. you know, most people now, when i was telling people that i was going to interview you, and i'd say, "i'm interviewing queen noor," they'd say, "oh, we love here, we love queen noor," this feeling of love. but people around the world know you as queen noor. >> mm-hmm. >> hinojosa: they don't know you as lisa halaby, the woman who you were. you were growing up as an american girl, and i think one of the things that people are fascinated by about you is the fact that you actually... you could make this decision to say, "i was lisa... i am, or was lisa halaby, an american girl, but i could also be this, i could also be royalty of someplace else." this ability to basically say, "i could be someone else," change your identity, is really quite extraordinary. >> well, first of all, it was my husband who changed the identity in the way you described it, wit
