i'm chris hayes. with four more states to set to hold the republican nominating contest tomorrow, the better late than never stop trump faction of the gop still faces long odds. after weekend of mixed results for trump, for the first time, that faction may have some wind at its back. on saturday, republican voters managed to blunt some of trump's momentum. he beat ted cruz in two southern state primaries in louisiana and kentucky. he won in maine and kansas by pretty wide margins. 46 to 33 in maine where trump was endorsed and 48-23 in kentucky. that gave cruz nine more delegates and overall it's looking more and more like a two-man race. we'll have more about rubio in a bit. tomorrow, the republican front-runner facing the michigan primary with 59 delegates up for grabs and largely white working class electorate who one would think would be receptive to his message on trade. >> cars will be made in our country. we have been fighting. >> a new poll shows trump with a commanding lead over his rivals. 3

chris hayes has been at a bernie sanders' watch party in chicago this evening. chris, what's it like at the ground level? the candidate, of course, is in arizona. >> yeah, look, i think there was a lot of hope about illinois and missouri among the sanders' folks. there was particularly hope here in illinois, because there has been such a strong grassroots sort of cultivated, particularly around cook county, there's a state's attorney's race here, for the state's attorney who didn't prosecute the laquan mcdonald police officer. she was kicked out tonight. a lot of action on the left. yet still sanders lost cook county by about eight points to hillary clinton. i think that indicates he's probably going to fall short. now, in the sort of apportionment scheme we have on the democratic side, that find in the sense that it hits proportional and he won't suffer some winner take all defeat. the problem is coming out of tonight, looking at a path forward where he has to now winsome where between 60%, 70% of the remaining delegates. the further you go in the process withou

i'm chris hayes. live from the place de la bourse, people have been gathering all day after yesterday's attacks. nbc learned the two brothers who detonated suicide bombs in brussels khs alid and brahim kbrks akraous were involved in paris providing a safe house for those who carried out that attack. law enforcement officials tell nbc news belgian authorities had poor knowledge the attack here was being planned though it was not specific enough information to permit them to stop the horrific bombings of the metro and airport that left 31 dead and 300 injured. belgian and u.s. officials now say they are certain the man on the left in this airport surveillance picture najim laachraoui, the suspected bomb maker died in the attack. confirmed dead is brahim bakraoui and brother, khalid, who died in the metro bomb. the man dressed in white is believed to have fled the scene at the airport. meanwhile the bloodshed in brussels continues to reverberate through the american political system and the campaign with

i'm chris hayes. there are two races under way in the republican presidential election. the one for the votes of citizens who actually go cast a primary ballot for the candidate of their choice. that race gets the big headline in the flashy election night coverage. that where campaigns post most of their energy and resources and we in the news media dissect every detail. after the candidates have moved on, the other race unfolds behind the scenes. it's the process of selecting the delegate, the real people and representatives to go to the republican convention this summer in cleveland. in the anti-trump forces want any hope of stopping trump, this is the race they cannot lose. first race, the one playing out in public is getting about to the magic number, 1237 delegates. trump is still the only candidate within striking dance. next primary is in wisconsin a week from tomorrow. it's winner take all which means the tiniest margins could decides whether he gets all 42 or nothing at all. trump has already run into a buzz saw with wisconsin's robust conservative establishment

i'm chris hayes. after last night's election results, this much is clear. barring some huge unforeseen event that forces him out of the republican primary race, donald trump will either become the party's presidential nominee, or despite having the most delegates, he'll be toppled by gop leaders this summer in cleveland and could potentially be the messiest, most chaotic convention in decades. until now for the entire time trump has led the race, conventional wisdom has held the only way to beat him is to narrow the field and consolidate the anti-trump vote. now the opposite seems to be true. after super tuesday, the only candidate winding down his campaign appears to be ben carson and many of his voters are expected to go to trump. everyone else is still in it. and while no one of them has much hope of defeating him outright, the party's best shot at stopping trump may be for all of them to stay in the race and split the upcoming votes as evenly as possible. because this is the magic number. 1,237. that's the number of delegate trump needs to lock up the r
