dominic chu takes a look at the stocks and sectors driving this bull run. >> reporter: for some it seems like so long ago and for others the wounds from the financial crisis are still fresh. but the market has come a long way since bottoming out on march 9th, 2009, and that was the day, remember, stocks hit a closing low during the crisis. since that day, the dow jones industrial average is up close to 160%. the s&p 500 index has gained about 190%. and the nasdaq composite is up a staggering 265%. taking a closer look at the industries and sectors that have really been driving the gains, it's been consumer discretionary or retail-oriented stocks that have really led the way higher followed by financials then industrials. each of those sectors is characterized as cyclical means companying within them are closely tied to the up and downs of the overall economy. take a stock like coffee giant starbucks. at the crisis lows, it was worth around $4 a share after adjusting for stock splits. today it's about $57. or athletic apparel maker underarmor, back then it was close to $3 on a split-adjus

for "nightly business report," i'm dominic chu. >> so what could a weak earnings season mean for the market? david is senior equity strategist at ubs wealth management research. he joins us now to discuss that. david, welcome, good to have you with us. the market has had a tremendous month of march since february 11th, it's up double digits, done very, very nicely. is the market looking past what everybody seems to say is going to be one of the worst earnings quarters that we will have seen in many, many years? what's going on? >> yeah, tyler. i think you frhave to take thin in context. when we started the year, there was a lot of concern about a slowdown in china, becoming a hard landing. there were concerns about the u.s. economy, itself, whether it would continue to grow or not. and now we've seen some signs of stabilization in the chinese economy, seen some signs of stabilization in the u.s. manufacturing sector as well. and i think that's what's powered the rebound on top of the fact that the fed has been a little bit more accommodative. so now we can get back to i think where w

break it down, a man that was lost and now is found, dom chu. hello, dom. >> i don't know about lost and found, maybe a little of both. we want to take a look at stocks not lost, not found all at the same time because pretty much it's been a no man's land for the stock market. look at the 52-high, the high over the past year versus the low over the past year, right now we're pretty much smack-dab in the middle of it. if you take a look at dow components, it's even more so. this is what i need. check out what's happening with shares of visa. if you look at visa stock, right now it's trading just around $71, $72 a share. that's right there in between it's 52-week high and low, between $50 and $80 a share. drug giant merck, $53 a share. now talking 52-week range, $45 and change to $61 and change. again, right there in the middle. caterpillar, a stock that's been beaten up all kinds of ways here in the global macroeconomic sense. that stock again, $72, $73 a share, right in the middle of the range. jpmorgan on the big bang side of things, $59 or so
