i want to start with juliette kayyem, homeland security expert.n talking to a lot of your sources in the united states. i'm curious what u.s. officials are saying right now about the investigation and the counterterrorism operations in belgium. is there confidence right now? there's a great deal of concern that there are imminent attacks, plots very much in the works right now. are u.s. officials confident their european counterparts are doing enough to foil them? >> there's a couple of things i've been hearing. the first is that everyone is going with the belief that this is not the end. it would be somewhat delusional to believe that, well, if we just get the guy in the white hat from the pictures that everything will be safe. these guys have networks that are either connected or may be working separately. clearly the arrests last friday triggered a series of activities and everyone anticipates that others are going on. the question is whether both paris -- or french and brussels officials can actually stop them in time and that's the challenge

cnn national security analyst juliette kayyem who formerly served as assistant to homeland security.elligence committee, mike rogers. pa paul cruickshank, increased security of the so-called soft targets, it's very difficult to cover the wide range of kind of targets we've seen attacked in paris, whether it's a concert hall, outdoor cafes, even an airport like this. >> yeah, the airport in brussels not really being particularly a soft target because they ratcheted up security, there were military personnel patrolling the area outside the airport. the area inside the terminal and the departures hall and they managed to get through despite this even though it was a hardened target. but, of course, somewhere like an airport or a concert venue or a metro, you can't protect all these public spaces. people just have to sort of go about their daily lives. basically they've got an almost unlimited target set that they can now go after. that's why it's so important to bust these cells before they can launch these attacks. it appears they prevented part of a cell from launching the attacks whe

also juliette kayyem. her new book is "security mom, an unclassified guide to protecting our homeland and your home." and paul cruickshank is back with us. bob, first to you. bob and then juliette. i want your reaction to this new information paul brought us of this picture of this new suspect. >> well, the whole connection with syria is becoming more and more clear. and the fact that these people are hiding among refugees is politically significant for europe because there's a huge argument of how many are going to be let in. germans have let in a million. there's going to be this big turn against arabs in europe, which is, i think, going to make things worse. and frankly, the moroccans getting involved with the islamic state, i served in morocco. it's just bizarre. i mean fairly apolitical people. they work hard to radicalize. now these communities in europe, moroccan, algerian, tunisian descent. it's bad for europe. there's millions of these people. they're going to fall under suspicion and affect europe

juliette kayyem u.s.ecretary for homeland security and also with us cnn counterterrorism analyst philip mudd who sat at the threat table at the cia and fbi. paul cruickshank, you've been working your sources all day, hearing a lot of things particularly about these german arrests. >> very interesting developments in germany in the last 48 hours. two arrests, including in a town that isn't far from the belgian border. there was an individual there that local police saw loitering around a train station. a checked his identity papers and noticed he wasn't meant to be in the european countries. they then searched through his phone and saw two very interesting text messages. one with the name of the metro bomber in brussels and one other with just one word "ends" and they connected this guy, they feel, to this brussels attack. they are investigating all of that. they also found a hospital bill in belgium for injuries to his torso. so one of the lines of inquiry tonight is was he a victim of police bullet or so
