kristen fisher joins us live from washington with the latest. >> reporter: it appears as trump decision to skip cpac may have hurt him. he came in a distant third to marco rubio and ted cruz. cruz won the straw poll. rubio came in second and then trump in third at 15%. followed by kasich with 8% of the vote. now trump was the only republican presidential candidate who did not speak at cpac. he cancelled less than 24 hours before he was supposed to speak. cpac organizers say he backed out because they refused to give into his demands. trump's campaign says that's not true. they said it was a strategic decision. people are voting or caucusing and trump needed to be out on the campaign trail campaigning. >> we need to get out today -- we got a caucus. i'm going with you. we're going to caucus and after making this huge u-turn to kansas, if i lose i'm going to be so angry at you. oh. >> reporter: trump's words, he's probably very angry with those voters in kansas because we now know trump lost kansas he lost to cruz. marco rubio though spoke this morning and he was very well received. rubio

kristen fisher is live from our dc bureau with the latest. hi, kristen. >> reporter: hi. bernie sanders is suffering from a severe delegate deficit. hillary clinton has nearly two times as many delegates. sanders is showing no signs of slowing down. today he held two events in arizona, one in phoenix, the other right by the border. when asked about his losses last tuesday, he said, i'm most disappointed by the loss in ohio. but he believes that he can still win in states like arizona, new york, pennsylvania, and california. yet today sanders again saved his sharpest attacks for donald trump. >> i would hope that all of us are rightly appalled by the divisive, bigoted and zenophobic comments of people like donald trump. attacks against people in a very personal way is not what this country is supposed to be about. >> reporter: sanders still says he's zero intentions of dropping out before the convention. behind the scenes, president obama may be ready to get behind his former secretary of state. the "new york times" is reporting that last week the president told a group of

kristen fisher is live at the madison hotel in washington, d.c., with the very latest. y, kristen. >> reporter: hey, julie. right now there is a line that stretches outside this ballroom, and down two to three city blocks. and to get from the end of that line to the front right behind me takes about two hours. so turnout is certainly slightly higher than expected here. but as you said, keep in mind, there's only 27,000 registered republicans in all of the district. that's just 6% of d.c. voters. so republicans here aren't really used to having their votes matter in a presidential primary. but this time, they do. and here's why. 19 delegates are up for grabs, but only 3 to 8,000 voters are expected to turn out here today. so you have a very small number of people voting. and a relatively large number of delegates up for grabs. >> we have 19 delegates. that's as many delegates as hawaii, rhode island, more delegates than vermont, delaware and all the territories, except puerto rico. the interesting thing there is, though, we have almost as many delegates as places like new

kristen fisher joins us with a wrap of the events and what we have going forward. hi, kristen. >> hay, leland. two things stand out from yesterday. the huge margin that bernie sanders won by. in washington state, 46 points. in alaska, beat her by a ridiculous 64 points. here in seattle, near record turnout. the state's democratic party says there's a good chance that more democratic voters came out to caucus yesterday than in 2008 when obama won. that shows you how much bernie sanders has energized the base in this state. it was a progressive state. lots of liberal, white voters. sanders' core constituentcy. sanders won every single county. that is huge. hawaii was the one state that could have gone for clinton and indeed, sanders won that state by the smallest margin. he still won 70-30. neither of them campaigned in hawaii. same with alaska. not a lot of delegates. 16 in alaska. sanders scooped up most of them by winning 82-18. sanders has narrowed the delegate gap. clinton has a very big lead in terms of delegates. still, this morning on the sunday shows, sanders

kristen fisher has more in washington. she's in total. at this hour, what are the results there in your state where you are? >> so far ten counties are in and bernie sanders is winning all of them. he was always expected to win wisconsin. this is a very prerogative, very liberal state. but what is surprising in these early results coming in is that sanders is doing very well in counties that hillary clinton was hoping to take. counties that are out east, much more rural. clinton had even campaigned in one of the counties that bernie sanders won. she had campaigned there earlier this week. there is a lot of boeing engineers, a lot of earospace engineers. she had been hoping which boeing benefited from, would really help her. so far based on the very early preliminary results, that does not appear to be the case. we're still waiting on seattle and seattle is really sanders' country. he held a huge rally here last night. 15,000 people turned out at safeco field where the seattle mariners play. this is where he made his final pitch to washing

bigger impact if he wins the republican nomination allen fisher al jazeera all eyes will now be turning to new york. joining us live from there, kristenet's start off with the democratic side of things how important is this primary to bernie sanders? >> well, it is going to be crucial for bernie sanders and i am standing outside of a rally that is scheduled to get underway in an hour and a half, if you notice there's people lines up around the block. new york is going to be crucial for bernie, but there's actually a primary in wisconsin this weekend that he is expected to win and he needs to win big in wisconsin, and then win with big here in new york if he has any hope of catching up to the front runner hillary clinton. but she is extremely popular in this state. this is her home state. she is about 12 points ahead in the latest polls, she also extremely popular with minority voters here in the state. her lead with black voters is even larger than that. if you look at the crowd here, it is a very young crowd, and bernie sanders chose the bronx to hold this event, which is a very minority strong area there's a lot of hissen paics and
