senior political writer mark caputo joins me from beautiful miami, florida.ue see palm trees. thank you for being with me. let's talk about rubio. i think look, he has said that it's make or break, he needs this state, he is home state senator. he should have some advantage. a 16-point spread in the cnn poll. the other polling shows trump ahead. what happened? why isn't he doing better there? >> they say elections are about choices. you look across the country at the results, florida is a mini united states, voters are choosing donald trump. they seem to like him better in the republican primary. yeah, this is rubio's home state. in the end i think if you look on balance at everything, rubio probably didn't do enough care and feeding back here at home over a period of time. and also, i don't think his campaign got started soon enough on organizing, getting a ground game going, and really getting the word out. he started to go for broke at one of the last super tuesdays, there have been so many i can't remember. but it seemed to be a few days too late. that's

mark caputo with politico runs a daily tally of these mail-in votes, it's that's important. >> they'vetes cast here in pinellas county, between both parties. okay, another thing that i've learned, this area is sort of a bellwether, right? because this county is about 50% republican, 50% democrat. this whole corridor, the i-4 corridor that runs east to west through florida, tends to kind of swing, both ways, right? so for democrats, is this a key area? would you see a ton of ads here? >> i think you'll see a lot of ads. what you've seen is the republicans coming in, the stop-trump movement, with all the super pac ads, which are, by the way, very expensive. these are not candidate ads. if they wanted to do this, it would probably have been smart to do it in some of the other states, where it was a little bit cheaper. >> yeah, florida's not cheap. >> but i think what you're going to see here is clinton probably taking this state a little bit more seriously after what happened in michigan, and bernie's folks are obviously enthusiastic. you've shown that on msnbc all throughout the show. >>

analyst and former aide to the rand paul campaign, elise jordan, and politico's florida reporter, mark caputo, i want to talk about the debate. trum said in the spin room after 11 debates, there's no point to them anymore. after seeing what you saw last night, do you think the public is getting anything out of them? >> well, i think there's no point to debates when the conversation is lowered to the level that trump has lowered it. i mean, it was absolutely ridiculous last night. the avoidance of talking about any real policy. that's where i feel that the moderators especially chris wallace, did a great job, really honing in on actual numbers of trump's policy proposals. it just -- i mean, this whole republican primary has just denigrated into a food fight. and it's just so nasty and it could have been avoided. trump is clearly a very weak candidate. he's going to be a terrible candidate to go up against hillary clinton because he clearly has so many weaknesses that unfortunately haven't been attacked until the last two debates. so he's a weak candidate that -- it's just, it's really, i reall
