the plane we understand was en route from alexandria from cairo. current reports say there were about 60 people on board. but all of this is early information so it may change in the hours ahead. many of the details surrounding this incident are still unclear. but let's bring in our correspondent in cairo, ian lee also following this breaking news story. ian what, can you tell us? >> reporter: well, like you said, errol, details are pretty sparse. we're hearing, though, that roughly 80 people were on board this domestic egypt air flight. that was going from cairo to alexandria that it landed in larnaca according to police officials there we're hearing that there is one person, one hijacker although we cannot confirm this. that's the initial report, one hijacker on board. but again, this is -- all very preliminary information. egypt has come under heavy scrutiny for their airport security in sharm el sheikh after last october a bomb blew up a plane, this is just a later blow to them that this plane originated from cairo would have been hijacked. >> a

he has been following the story as it has unfolded from cairo. ian, tell us what we know about the hijacker and what appears to be the motive for taking command of this flight. >> reporter: this basically the facts we have at this hour. this plane took off at 6:30 a.m. it was going from alexandria to here in cairo. that is about a 45-minute flight. during the flight, a man said he had an explosive belt and demanded that the pilot divert to somewhere in europe or istanbul. somewhere other than the final destination. this is according to the officials. the pilot said he did not have enough fuel and they landed in larnaca. after which, all egyptian passengers were led off the plane. five foreigners remain and seven crew members. in the past minutes, we have seen other people released. the egyptian authorities have cast doubt on whether the explosive belt that the hijacker claims he has is actually real or not. as we're hearing as well from cyprus officials, the motivation seems to be around an ex-wife. the spokesman of the presidency here in egypt co

as you know, the flight was scheduled to be 30 minutes, flying from alexandria to cairo. somewhere during that flight, the hijacker allegedly announced to the pilot that he was hijacking the plane. and that he wanted the plane to fly to istanbul. supposedly the pilot said we don't have the gas to get to istanbul. so somehow this decision was made to land in cyprus. that's the one question i have -- if in fact that's true, according to the egyptair authority, if the individual originally wanted to go to istanbul, you know, it makes this domestic situation a little challenging. let's see, i'll go to turkey, well, if i can't go to turkey i'll go see my ex-wife somewhere else. the authorities have to understand what's taking place there as well as according to egyptair authorities, he has indicated that if his ex-wife was brought to the plane and he sees there, that the situation will be resolved. that supposedly he'll surrender. now, what that means, how serious he is about doing that, authorities now are starting to tread on a little thin ice. they want to make sure psycholo

joining us is the president of the. cairo-based think tank. this is something that should not have happened. especially in october of last year and that unfortunate flight that was leaving the resort area and a very popular area throughout the region. we are totally obliterated from a terrorist attack and at that point many people started to talk about they had to beef up security and increase security at all of the airports and make sure air travel was safe. what happened here? >> actually it is difficult to tell. it is like lon den -- london for example. it was twice before we check in. and then have our laptops checked. the security has increased and we can see. clearly there must be an issue where someone will give them help. i heard they are looking for somebody and three are persons. but again that's not being confirmed. that clearly has given details and might have had egyptian-americans. we had egyptian-brits at the door. i think clearly the authorities who have promised to have the stand down haven't done their pork work. and it cooper

ian lee on the phone with us from cairo. we actually now want to bring in jeffrey thomas, he is the editor in chief of airline ratings.com and joins us via webcam from perth, australia. it is a very disturbing development, but what do you make of this airbus 320 being hijacked and currently sitting on the tarmac there in cyprus? >> look, it raises very disturbing questions. first of all, how, if this bomb, this explosive belt this hijacker has, if it is real -- it may well be that it is not real -- but if it is real, how on earth did he get it on board. now as the previous caller was talking, the real question mark of egypt's airports after the metro jet crash and explosion is what about an inside job. and it's fairly well understood that the metro jet was an inside job. and this may well be the same thing. that this explosive belt was smuggled on board this aircraft, ahead of its departure. and this is something that raises serious questions about the security, screening of the employees at egypt's airports. and other airpor

it is one of the smaller airports in cairo. but there has been a lot of beefed up security in general across the egyptian airports, particularly following the plane that was downed in sharm el sheikh. and for now, it's not clear whether in fact as rehema was saying that this individual did actually manage to get any explosives on the plane. since that incident back in october in which isis claimed responsibility for planting a bomb on a jet, security has been beefed up. but we do know in the past there have been serious security gaps not just in some of the smaller airports, but as well as some of the larger and busier airports. alexandria being egypt's second largest city, there's question of whether or not if he did get some explosives on the plane, how he managed to do that. if he was working with anyone at the airport. at this statement, that's no confirmation that he was in fact capable of doing that. >> andam one more question, you mentioned that security has been peefed up since that russian -- beefed up since that russia

the middle east. >> an egyptian airplane was hijacked while flying from alexandria to cairo. it was forced to land on cyprus. >> abc's terry moran is live for us in our london bureau for the breaking details. a press conference wrapped up just moments ago in egypt. what did we hear. >> reporter: they're managing this situation right now, as you point out, began a few hours ago, a plane egyptair ms181 taking off from alexandria although that flight on ridge nated in sab saudi arabia. they don't have the name of the hijacker but the crew taking all precautions when confronted by a man who said he had some kind of explosives on him. he informed the pilot. the plane diverted to cyprus. most passengers have been taken off that plane and we should say it happened in a very calm manner. there was no panic, no running. it's not a militaryized situation. they have taken that plane to a part of the airport, away from term analysis, away from other planes. and right now, we're told there are still several passengers on that plane, four passengers and the crew, as well, and the hijacker.

he is joining us live from the destination of the flight cairo. ian, it appears that most passengers have left the aircraft. these negotiations have continued. but what more do we know about the situation? >> that's right. just to recap, there are seven crew members on board the plane and five foreigners. earlier, we heard that four foreigners were left on the plane. the ministry corrected that. there are five. right now, they are looking into the motivation behind the incident. there has been some doubt cast by the egyptian officials about whether this is an explosive device like the hijacker claims. one egyptian official saying quote i doubt he had explosives because security has been heightened across egyptian airports, but we will be able to confirm that later. this official is referencing the fact that ever since october when the russian metro jet plane was blown up over egypt, that officials have stepped up security at airports across the country. we do not know if this hijacker's explosive device which he claims is real or not. officials and
