the mailman who started the green book.ow many of you have relatives or grandparents that were born in another country? .k you have a migration story as well. in the african-american community, we had over 6 million 1970 that got to on the road to look for a better life for themselves and their family. they call it the great migration. lawrence did a whole panel exhibit on this that was here last summer. i had the good fortune of being able to go in there and film all the panels. with the green book was about, is about, is about traveling with dignity. eating on the road, being able to stop, eat, use the restroom. it feels safe. without threats of violence or death. victor green, who had a seventh grade education, who lived in harlem, who worked in hackensack new jersey as a letter carrier, he started working in 1913. in 1918 he was married to a woman from richmond, virginia. they moved back to harlem, 938 saint nicholas avenue. 28 years later he started the green book. he would take alma home during the summer to visit her

they illustrate the experience of the everyday soldier, whether they were a combat soldier, or mailman in the service. they all have their own personal experience. maybe they were not part of the most heroic battle, but they all can treated in their way, and are all individual people. reading these letters brings that to life. anything that talks to our history in the station is important. what is important about letters is they are individuals. we can talk about the constitution and the records of the government, presidents, and things like that, but these are things being produced by individuals, by you and i, who either voluntarily, or workhorse were coerced into serving. they have concerns about getting their bills paid, missing their loved ones, and whether the dog was fed, and how the family is doing, things like that. it is at that level that is amazingly important, what people 1864, and 1933, or what was important to them. was religion important to them? was the government important? was the nation important? what did they think of the nation? what was the consumption of being
