. >> i'm leland vittert. welcome to america's election headquarters from washington. >>> we begin with a fox news alert as we follow breaking story from just south of philadelphia, p.a. an amtrak train derailed there this morning. the national transportation safety board is on its way to the crash site. you're seeing some early video right now. fire commission there are says two people were killed. they were not passengers on the train but were rather on the tracks. the amtrak spokesman says 31 passengers from that train were taken to area hospitals but that none of them have life threatening injuries. authorities for the rail service train 89 hit a backhoe that was on the tracks. why it was on the tracks we don't know. that backhoe partially derailed the lead engine. happened in chester, pennsylvania. the train was traveling from new york to savannah, georgia. seven crew members on board. northeast corridor service between philadelphia and wilmington, delaware has been suspended. we're going to have a report

fox news correspondent leland vittert is live on the scene. leland? was an old fashioned shootout here, greta. and still now about 4.5 hours into this you can see the greyhound bus station resembles a large police force turnout area. we have the fbi, the atf, u.s. marshals, obviously, the richmond police. and then the virginia state miss have a huge contingent here. it was their troopers involved in this shooting around 2:45, somewhere inside the bus station. a man was confronted by one of the troopers. why? we don't know what the trooper was doing there. we don't know. from there, this man opened fire on the trooper. the trooper was hit and was gravely injured. is he clinging to life as we speak. there were other troopers here in the bus station at the time. they opened fire and killed the suspect. somewhere in that hail of bullets, two other people werehom, we do not know. last press conference police were very tight-lipped about what was going on here there was a lot of discussion was this a training exercise? was the virginia state police out here

martha: leland vittert live in richmond, virginia. do investigators know why this gunman opened fire? reporter: they still do not. while police have not released the name of the gunman. it's clear think is someone known to police. let me give you a sense of what played out here at the greyhound station here in richmond. the virginia police chose this station as a place to conduct criminal interdeck and recognition. just inside those doors is where chad -- urmire confronted the suspect. there was some type of discussion between the former marine and the state trooper, and the suspect. and police do not know why the gunman pulled out that handgun from this waistband. >> if you see suspicious activity, go over and engage that conversation. that's what was taking place here. in the early stables of the kfg is wet other subject pulled the weapon and shot self times. reporter: during this training there were a dozen other state troopers in the staying. they saw what happened and opened fire on the shooter, killing him. martha: what do we kn

martha: leland vittert is live at the white house. what's the strategy with these comments. reporter: there is a lot of critics on both sides of the aisle. we have seen this at times like this in the past. they go to an agency, involved in the fight against isis and he declared momentum is on our side. >> it has been a bad few months. in the days and weeks ahead we intend to take out more. every day isil leaders wake you have and understand it could be their last. >> there are indications the administration may be willing to put a little more muscle behind their syria strategy. if the syrian peace talks fail the administration may consider providing the rebels with more serious weapons that could include surface-to-air missiles. martha: there is no doubt we need to deny them of the ground they hold in syria. but do the critics have legitimate points here? >> regardless of what the president says, there is what the military calls ground troops. you would think the fight against isis is not going well. then there is the perception of isis's powers, they successfully launch att
